Neat picture. "Synchronized Sleepers, Human/Nature Finalist. Photographer Franco Banfi and his fellow divers were following this pod of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in the Caribbean Sea near the Commonwealth of Dominica, when the giants suddenly seemed to fall into a vertical slumber. This phenomenon was first studied in 2008, when a team of biologists from the UK and Japan inadvertently drifted into a group of non-responsive sperm whales floating just below the surface. Baffled by the behavior, the scientists analyzed data from tagged whales and discovered that these massive marine mammals spend about 7 percent of their time taking short (6- to 24-minute) rests in this shallow vertical position. Scientists think these brief naps may, in fact, be the only time the whales sleep." Yeaaaa! We have a new, more recent, viewer to this thread beside mmhmm , @jma23 , Peace Of Mind , and myself. Welcome copperboxes . Thanks for liking this picture.

Speaking of fauna...... After getting stuck on Metro, fox takes bus to Île Sainte-Hélène It wasn't the Green line but a bus that took one lost fox from McGill Metro to Île Sainte-Hélène Friday night thanks to a little help from police. The fox was spotted on the tracks on Friday evening and, at 9:30 p.m., police were called to help. When they arrived, they found the fox on the tracks, on the side headed toward Honoré-Beaugrand. Police cut power for about five minutes so they could climb down on the tracks and save him. Montreal police Const. Caroline Chevrefils said Metro police weren't shocked by the fox. "In the subway, we're always ready to find anything," she said. Police used rods with rope at the end to grab the fox, she added that it wasn't aggressive, she said. After it was captured, police took the fox to Île Sainte-Hélène by bus, where it was released into the wild. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/metro-fox-mcgill-ile-saint-helene-1.4237997

The less fun side of nature. I keep my chickens in a chain link dog run because it's the only thing strong enough to keep the coyotes out. I did put a lighter duty chicken wire over the top to keep out the hawks. After about 15 years the top wire became rusty/brittle, and a raccoon tore through it and got in. It killed all the chickens and left through the same hole. Raccoons are one of the few animals that will kill for no reason. He didn't eat any of them. My fault for not checking the condition of the wire on top. It will be replaced before I get new chicks in September. I already bought a new roll of wire.

I am aware of raccoons killing one adult cat and one kitten who lived in my backyard. A couple raccoons eat the backyard and garage cats' food. I chase the raccoons out when I see them. On the other hand, when a local opposum eats their food, I let him. I don't mind opposums. And when I see the opposum sleeping in the garage along side the cats, I let him be..

I feed feral cats, too. I put up a sign, "No raccoons, no pet cats from the neighbourhood! Homeless cats ONLY!" They're ignoring it.

I leave the possums alone also. They don't harm anything and clean up all the carrion on the property. I like it when I see the babies riding around on mama's back.

Went to the farm supply store today and found out the new chicks will be in Sept. 1st. Don't have much time to put the new top on.

This past June, I found one of my regular visiting possums around the corner from my home lying dead in the road after being hit by a car. I figured out the owner of the home where the opossum was laying dead would just leave it there so I picked him up and buried him on my property. My clean up 'guy' took care of my property so I might as well give him a proper burial.

Donate to a school which has a garden students tend? I'd love some, but there may be a problem with getting them through customs. My niece was stopped at the border because she had an avocado to feed her toddler. "Eat it right now, or forfeit, as per the Department of Agriculture!"

Not quite flora, but those are some impressive rain totals that they are predicting for Harvey in Texas. Some places 30/35". It's got to be hard on the native wildlife who can't escape the area.

I always think about that and how the land based animals cope with it. I also wonder how long it takes to repopulate the species in that one particular area. I know re-population occurs, but just how long does it take to get the balance back. I saw this video a few months back. There are some good souls who go out and rescue native animals when it's safe to do so.

Kind of scary as they attack all at once on a pheromone signal. Ugh.

I'm the only one sitting in a parking lot, logged on to YMAM, with a box of baby chickens.

Fencing fixed, also made stronger. They won't be out there for a couple of weeks though. They are living in a large box with a heat lamp in the barn. Two days now and they are doing great !

By chance do you think any of the new chickens will be one of those you see in videos running up to its owner and giving him/her a hug?
