What do you do when you errantly get a reputation for loving something you really, really, don’t? I got 5 bottles of sweet wines for my birthday this year. I love wine, but my SO’s sister has come under the assumption that Riesling is my absolute favorite, and is spreading the word. It is really my least favorite wine, and I don’t know how to correct that assumption without looking like an ingrate to 5 generous people. We’ve been exchanging gifts for a few years, so I don’t think opting out of gift exchange will work. take the first and most difficult step at the next gift exchange and make the announcement. Thank you everyone for this sweet wine, but I would prefer (insert here) and second choice (insert here) give an option of an replacement. in case this sweet wine is a last minute gift - they now have an option or a choice of a last minute gift or be like a celebrity and leak the news to say someone who just can't keep a secret. that you really don't want any more of this wine.

Actually, I make my own vinegar, and Riesling vinegar is really good. Tart, with a hint of sweetness - its great on berries, poundcakes, etc. I also like to use it if I cook bitter greens like chard or kale. And Reisling vinegar is usually hard to find and kind of expensive, so it works out great. Moscato is another sweeter wine that makes good vinegar. That kind is really good for salad dressing. And making vinegar is really easy, and makes good x-mas gifts.

This IS a good idea but I laughed at what I imagine the expression on the gift giver's face if you "re-gifted" their wine present as vinegar!

White wines are more "dry" than reds. Reds are usually very sweet and "heavy" for lack of better words. Whites are more palatable with most foods - even beef - which red is normally served with.
Reds will also be more likely to leave you with a headache.
I prefer a nice Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, or White Zinfandel.

I know. I'm a horrible person No you're not.
You hate people wasting their time and energy on something you really don't want or need. Dealing with these gifts take time and energy that you could put to use elsewhere.
I was hoping to get some pointers from your thread myself...or at least get some good laughs reading about how others have handled similar situations.

Manischewitz is ultra sweet! You can only regift it if you put it in a nice vinegar bottle, maybe a handpainted one. Then they may not recognize that it started from the wine in the bottle they gave you.
