GAO report says Billions in Bloat Uncovered Inside the Beltway: ".......The report says there are 18 federal programs that spent a combined $62.5 billion in 2008 on food and nutrition assistance, but little is known about the effectiveness of 11 of these programs because they haven't been well studied. The report took particular aim at government funding for surface transportation, including the building of roads and other projects, which the administration has made a major part of its push to update the country's infrastructure. The report said five divisions within the Department of Transportation account for 100 different programs that fund things like highways, rail projects and safety programs. Similarly, it chided the government over encouraging federal agencies to purchase plug-in hybrid vehicles while having policies that agencies reduce electricity consumption. A spokesperson for the Department of Transportation said the president's budget for fiscal year 2012 "proposes to cut waste, inefficiency and bureaucracy by consolidating over 55 separate highway programs into five core programs, and by merging six transit programs into two programs."................. online.wsj.com/article/SB20001424052748703749504576172942399165436.html

Henry, there are so many program, so much good done, so much waste too. Where to start. Possible that is the problem, so much to do, so little time to do it all well. Possible that is the problem, trying to do it all at once, the looking at it closely, the tweaking of , the cutting , the moving, possible one or two at a time, With that said, they did have the bi partison committee..just finished..ideas and programs, all sides have interest, granted there are differences even by the public but over all all reasonable folks didn't dismiss completly. Most all realize yes there are identified problems and suggesions that are not off the wall. However, have you heard much about that study and recommendation since? Your report of 18 programs $62.5 combined spending..thats not saying all are a wast of money just what has been spent on them a year. I put uip a thread . $125 Billion on lost $ by fraud..that's $125 Billion...has there been any discussion here? We are still on the govvernor and unions . LOL

Why does the federal government provide any food and nutrition assistance, that should be done by the states.

Think the food stamp issue is state, surplus food comes from the federal, they are the ones who buy it, subsidies to the farmers.
