this weekend DH and I went to buy a few things for my new office. One of the stops was Ollie's.
I bought what I needed, DH was still in the store. I went to the van with the kids.
I put my stuff in the back, the kids got in. I told the kids I was going to bring the cart back to the store because there were no cart corrals in the parking lot. The store was about 50 yards away.
The kids said OK. I walk to the store. I hear DD screaming "mommy, where are you? and crying." A large pickup truck with a cap on it parked next to me, so she couldn't see me.
Oy.

Back in my day we would have comforted the child and used it as a learning experience. By todays' standards you should be arrested and have both your children taken away from you since clearly the state is more capable of parenting than you are.

Back, back in the day we would have smacked the kid for being an idiot.

Back, back in the day we would have smacked the kid for being an idiot. My kids were born in the 90's. No smacking. But I did let them walk to school alone (all two blocks) by third grade. For which I am still harshly judged. Clearly I don't love them.

Waaaaaay back in the Stone Age, kid would have been knocked into next week and sent to bed without supper.

In these times, unless the kid was under 4, she should have an iphone and called you. Says the 67 yo trying to understand his first iphone.

Yup. You'll be going away to college with her. And going on her honeymoon with her and her new DH. Don't fret, though. I don't think she's so far gone that she will be living in your basement as an adult. No. Not in your basement. No, she'll be living on the main floors of your house with you and DH and her DH and her kids.

Back, back in the day we would have smacked the kid for being an idiot. This made me laugh so hard. Ah, the 1970's... I remember my parents leaving us in the car for well over an hour while they went shopping - regularly. And, of course, we didn't dare do anything wrong while we were in the car bored out of our minds.... And, they even took us camping in Tahoe and left us alone in the campground while they went gambling for the night. Then again, when I was in 6th grade they started leaving us home alone for the weekend, or longer up to a week, and refused to tell anyone where they were going - because they didn't want their vacation to be interrupted. I got hurt once and called my grandparents to ask what to do. My grandma didn't seem shocked that the parents were out of town but no one knew where. Safe, really safe folks. Oddly enough, they also never left us groceries or money for food either. We were free to find something in the cupboard and no cash because they figured it would be spent on beer. I had a weird upbringing... Apparently...

I had a weird upbringing... Apparently... Mine wasn't the 70's, but I grew up in the middle of nowhere. No close neighbors, no phone, etc. Starting at 8 or 9 my parents would leave me and/or my sibling at home when they had business to attend to in civilization and I didn't want to go with them. I probably didn't want to go with them because of those hours spent in the car while they attended to boring things or went places that held no interest for me. Pretty sad when you'd rather stay at home by yourself and deal with any bears/wolves/coyotes/tweakers, etc. that may show up rather than spend quality time with your parents.

I had to go online and find the instructions. I felt like such a dumbass. My cousin suggested giving it to her 7 and 8 year olds and they would have it all figured out for me in an hour.

I'm 57 and don't have a smartphone yet....me is skeered of em. We're empty nesters, have 3 grown kids and dh and all the kids have them...meanwhile I just keep flippin' open my trusty dumbphone to make/answer a call or to text...I know I'm getting one soon (can't put it off any longer...) they've assured me I'll be able to understand all that you can do with it, but I'm tech challenged and oh good grief they show me everything on it and they go so fast changing from one screen to another, one app to another...I take it from the them and the damn thing changes from vertical to horizontal (or G** forbid to another screen entirely) and I didn't even DO ANYTHING but pick it up! Yeah, I understand it's how you hold the damn thing but still..) I need to take a class...sigh..

edit: But I DO really want (and need) to quit being trapped and limited to my laptop every time I want/need to get online...and I see women in the stores everywhere checking prices/downloading coupons/shopping/confirming deliveries/using the GPS features/and all the other great features! of them. (i'm still pluggin in my garmin thingy to my vehicle...sigh..)
Would love to be able to connect to cyberspace whenever and wherever I am at any given moment, so I'm gonna get one and learn/join the 21st century...finally. Plus we go to our cottage every weekend and it would come in real handy since I barely watch the cable t.v. up there (but am forced to if I don't choose a dvd or a good book, which I have alot of..)
