One of the first lessons I was taught when shooting- always know what lies behind your target- and make sure there is a back stop before firing.
Idiotic DA comment: The injuries to the baby were an improbable accident, Dougherty said. “Nobody would be able to make that shot if they tried,” he said. “It's unbelievable.”
Hitting anyone randomly shooting is improbable- so what? If you let lead fly- especially from a high powered rifle and have no idea what lies down range- you are negligent.
So sick of the 'accident' labels when it comes to guns.

Sitting on the couch holding your new baby and a bullet goes through his eye socket thanks to the neighbors out shooting deer.

Incompetence can still cause an accident.
The shooter was an incompetent gun owner. I don't believe he intended to shoot the baby. Therefore since there was no intent, by definition it's an accident.
The incompetent gun owner should face penalties for his incompetence... up to and including jail and/or fines.

I am just tired of the term 'accident' being used.
Just like a car crash when a drunk kills a few people on the sidewalk right? No intent, so by definition it is an accident, right?

Yes, that's still an accident. a VERY predictable one, but an accident none the less (and unless there has been a change that I am unaware of, one that the drunk gets punished for).

Oh yes- the drunk driver will get pummeled- man that shot a baby will not.

In the traffic world we prefer not to use the term accident any longer. Accident implies we can't do anything to prevent it and there is no cause or pattern to pinpoint. We now call them crashes. Kind of relates to your point on labeling this an accident.

If you fire a gun , you should be completely accountable for where that bullet goes.

If you maim or injure someone with a gun YOU are responsible. Period.
