My grandfather liked chocolate chunk cookies (you know, the ones with the square pieces of chocolate rather than the round chip ones)

I've posted this before, but my 97 year old grandmother goes through 9-12 pounds of m&m's a month--she shares, and I don't police my kids on how much they eat of them when we are there--but STILL that is a ton of m&m's. She also gets strawberry ice cream for dessert after lunch AND dinner 7 days a week. At 97 she's earned it. DAAAAAMN.

My Grandma drinks caffine free diet coke all day, every day. She literally does not drink anything else. But hey she is 90 years old. (Actually she's done that as long as I have known her). ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

In the last year of her life, my grandmother (at the time 82 years old) started smoking again (she took off her oxygen, first). Some of the family freaked that she was going to get lung cancer. My grandmother, my brother, and I laughed; we were pretty sure she already had it. But, she wasn't going to get diagnosed because she had no intention of being treated. She was ready to go and, damn it, she was going to enjoy however much time she was stuck here.

My mother is 78 and has been talking about being near the end since her early 70's. I take it more as the musings of an elderly woman than anything to be concerned with. Her father was 89 when he died and all her siblings are living except one who died in her early 50's but had lifelong health issues so I feel she will be around a while longer. She has slowed down quite a bit the last 5 years though, mostly after she fell 18 months ago, but her overall health is still pretty good. She had knee surgery over the summer to repair/remove some torn cartilege and we had to watch her like a hawk to keep her from moving around to much. To be honest I worry more about her when she goes with her baby sister (early 70's and has heart problems) to the casino in WV than I do when I know she's home alone and going to be cutting grass.
With your in laws I'd just play along a little and if you know their concerns are overblown just reassure them. As other's have stated they don't see your MIL as often as you do and the changes are sudden and more serious to them. I had a similar reaction when I saw my uncle a few months ago - he looked older and so tired. Then I had to remind myself that he was 80 years old and had been battling cancer this last year so of course he wasn't going to be as energetic as he was 20 years ago. As for the pushing and being overbearing, that's something for your DH and BIL to push back on, not you. Just deliver the messages like always and give your opinion and then let him deal with it unless he or your MIL ask you to do otherwise.

Michelyn, you just reminded me of my 96 year old great aunt who's been saying since I was little that she's not going to be around much longer. Funnily, she doesn't say that so much anymore. She still lives alone and would be out doing serious yard work if we didn't keep lots of it done for her. And by we, I mean dad, who lives next door. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png)

So, he ate fruit and grains for breakfast. I don't see a problem here. (Note: lard and sugar are not food groups that appear on the Tskeeter food pyramid, so they don't count.) And wine is a serving of fruit! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)
My cocktail napkins tell me so!
It is on my food pyramid! So, if you drink the whole bottle, you get quite a bit of your daily requirement of fruits and vegetables. And beer is a grain. You know, barley and hops And chocolate is a nut, cause it grows on a tree. I don't think my food pyramid is quite what the Dept. of Agriculture had in mind. But it works for me.

I think I could go through that many in half that time, if common sense and my dentist's crying weren't a factor. BTW, ever tried the mint M&Ms? Don't. They are stupidly addictive.

Woman had emphysema/COPD and smoked right up to the day before she went into hospice and died. If she had been aware at the time, she probably would have had a butt hanging out of her mouth in the ambulance. And she didn't always take off her nasal cannula for her O2 concentrator either. I kept waiting for the place to blow up. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/shocked.gif)

Although her sight is starting to go, which is sad. Her new Dr. told her "well you might live to 100" Her reply *holds up three fingers* (she was 97 at the time) Dr. ' Holy Shit you're 97!!!!' *checks chart* 'You're 97!!!!!!'

Update: Aunt-in-law messaged me this morning. She'll be here on Thursday afternoon. She wanted to borrow DH's seat walker. Umm... DH doesn't have a seat walker. He has a plain old walker (that he used for a couple days after back surgery. DH and I are just looking at ourselves like what is she planning on doing with MIL. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/headbang.gif) We're just bracing ourselves that this weekend may be rough for MIL - that there is probably going to be a major clash of wills with her sister. AIL nagged MIL so much that MIL is now refusing to go back with her. Not that we blame her. MIL was considering it, but after hearing the plans AIL had for her and apparently the nagging that AIL was giving her, she decided not to. DH was taking the kids to MIL's house today and I told him that if we need to run interference or if you want me to do it so that you can get some work done on Saturday, I will.

That is very nice of you to offer to be the bad-guy and deal with AIL -frankly, it sounds like it could be a lot of fun too - let me know if you need any help!

They are generally only available around here during the Christmas season. I check Target weekly starting in November and stock up when they're available. I have never seen the mint m&ms at any other time of the year.
I find that limiting myself to just a few mint m&ms a day provides the right balance to optimize the mint m&m experience while avoiding mint m&m burnout. They are larger (and, for some reason, lumpier) than regular m&ms, so a few go a long way.
Min m&ms. Yum.

Go ahead and revel Mutt. I'm currently enjoying my status as "unreasonable" DIL for not being happy about the remote controlled Mystery Machine MIL got for Cabe. (Esp. because both kids sometimes have trouble sleeping after watching Scooby Doo. I keep mentioning this to her and she keeps turning it on for them anyway. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/headbang.gif) ) However, since she ordered it out of a catalog or something and it's not working correctly, I don't have to deal with Cabe running it into everyone and the walls at home yet.

My guess is it often comes down to feeling unable to fully control your own life so you start trying to control other people around you.
If you aren't afraid of AIL never talking to you again, you can try a very rude direct statement. "AIL, what is going on in your life that is so frustrating you can't fix that you choose to take it out on MIL and try to control her?" Something like that. Better worded, more punchy. But you get the idea. AIL and SIL have no reason to stop and personal ones to continue. Fixating and pushing off their worries onto an outside target makes life easier for them. Only by redirecting their attention to their own lives and their projecting behavior do you have a hope of stopping it.
You probably won't though. Whatever their issues or demons are. They probably aren't brave enough to tackle them. I've watched patient families almost verbally torture the patient because of their own issues they had to foist with vehemence onto the patient. Some will probably never realize how much they were part of the problem instead of being part of a solution they thought they were creating.

Maybe I just need to look harder. Or maybe I should just walk past the candy aisle and go find the kitchen tool or laundry detergent I went into Target to buy and not even think about mint m&ms. (Like that's gonna happen now).

Eh, it's not that big of a deal. We get along fine usually. I try to remember that despite everything, she and FIL managed to raise DH to be the man I fell in love with. And they love the kids - that's the most important thing.

Well, I guess a trip to Target is in my future. I hope this doesn't turn into a speedy descent into overindulgence, addiction, and disgrace. Now that I know they are not really a scarce commodity, what if I can't continue to exercise discipline and moderation in the consumption of the ambrosia that is mint m&ms?

Only by redirecting their attention to their own lives and their projecting behavior do you have a hope of stopping it.
You probably won't though. Whatever their issues or demons are. They probably aren't brave enough to tackle them. I've watched patient families almost verbally torture the patient because of their own issues they had to foist with vehemence onto the patient. Some will probably never realize how much they were part of the problem instead of being part of a solution they thought they were creating.
I won't go that direction with her, but if it comes up I will make it very clear that it is MIL's life and whatever choices you agree or don't agree with, it is still her life and her's alone to run. It may never come up. We may be too busy with the kids/talking about her grandchild-to-be/her son's wedding, etc. We'll see how it goes.
