I love home-made soaps, etc - but the trouble with them is, they're usually too pretty to want to use.

And they have lye. So I keep them out as decorations

All soap is made with lye. Lye is what makes oils into soap. If you have a soap that didn't start with lye than it is not soap, it is something else. When your soap is finished you no longer have lye in your soap (unless you have used too much), you just have soap.

@xmascookie, even body wash (liquid)? If so .... then what in solid soap makes me break out? Just wondering

@xmascookie, even body wash (liquid)? If so .... then what in solid soap makes me break out? Just wondering Yep, even liquid soap starts with lye. Potassium hydroxide is normally used instead of Sodium hydroxide but both are alkali and both are caustic. If it says body wash on the label instead of liquid soap it isn't really soap, but will still get you clean. If it works for you than use it. I have no idea why liquid works better for you but it's probably not the lye as it would disappear in finished soap. Glycerin is usually added to liquid body washes and is a by product of real soap. It is often removed from real soap in manufacturing and sold for lotions , body wash, etc. so that added glycerin might be what your skin likes in body wash. I think it contributes to what I like about home made soap as the glycerin isn't removed. I had tried every kind of soaps, body washes for my eczema prone legs. Finally made my own cure. The oils/fats used in soaps can also play a part in how your skin reacts to a soap. My skin loves olive oil, palm, lard but I have to go light on the coconut oil in the winter or my skin gets dry. Lye has an undeserved bad reputation as far as grandma's harsh lye soap. Soap makers now use scales and calculators to determine just how much lye is needed for each individual oil to saponify, not just throw it all in and wait for soap like grandma had to. At least try the pretty soap. If your skin loves it or hates it it probably has more to do with the recipe than the lye. My long passionate answer to your simple question!

Wow! Mad skillz! Those soaps are absolutely beautiful. I don't think I could ever use one to wash with, but I could sure frame one!

Aren't they gorgeous? It is not even close to as easy as she makes it look in that video. She's incredible.

Those in the video are amazing - but like I said in post #1 last year, WAY too pretty to use.
I'd sometimes receive fancy designed guest soaps as gifts and I'd never put them out, for fear someone would actually use them.

No way! I have not seen her soap yet in person and she is sold out right now but I can tell you that her beautiful soap is also made with quality ingredients and I'm betting it smells completely awesome also. It is such a tiny little inexpensive indulgence and you simply must use it. You are supposed to enjoy just looking at it for a few weeks and then put it in the shower with you where you will enjoy it even more! I also know this woman loves ,loves, loves, making soap and she wants it to be used up so she can make more beautiful soap. Although she is sold out right now.

.
Your opinions (obviously) may vary from mine (and I respect that), but for showering/bathing, I have gel or lotion based body washes that I use that are mineral or aloe based... These soaps are decorative, and I'd be inclined to only put one on display for a house-party in a nice soap dish by the basin.
I always have nice liquid/lotion hand soap dispensers on my counter for guests to use.

Oh yah, you should do what ever you want with them. There are some decorative soaps that really are not that skin nourishing and probably should be just for looking pretty in the soap dish also. Hers are the best of both and that's why I think she's awesome. I have made a couple batches of liquid soap and it turned out ok but just wasn't very fun to make, boring really, so I'm back to bars. She is like the supreme baker who makes the delicious beautiful cupcakes. Do you just let them sit on the counter for decoration and not eat them? It's a common compliment/complaint I hear from soap makers that people tell them "they are to pretty to use" so "should I make them uglier?" lol!

After my parents moved, and I had to throw away so many things that were "too nice to use", I decided, screw that, I'm gonna use everything!
So, that coffee that special coffee that was a gift or I bought as a souvenir. Drinking that stuff. The tea that we bought in England? Yep, DS drank it (I still have one of the tins, it looks like a phone booth).
The really good chocolate that should be "saved for a special occasion"? Well, I've decided that getting out of bed on the weekend when I want to sleep in is special occasion enough.
The pretty consumables that are too pretty to use? Nope, those are going to be used too.
My SIL makes some gorgeous quilts, and gives them away for special occasions (weddings), or "just because". She was heartbroken when she made one for her gramma and, when gramma passed away, it was returned to her in pristine, never used condition. Her aunt had not allowed her gramma to use it because it was "too pretty" and it will "just get ruined". Well, SIL had wanted her gramma to completely wear it out, as "every time you use it, I want you to think of a hug from me". So, I know if I ever get one from her (if I ever get married, or she has an extra one), I'm going to use the hell out of it.
Life's too short not to enjoy the good stuff too.

Handmade in Florida with another great soap.
I think I will try this spinning one. Looks fun and pretty easy.

Tonight I made 4 small batches of the Soap Queens bath fizzie bombs. But I had the bright idea that instead of buying moulds for them, I'd use plastic Easter eggs. Bonus, built in packaging! I was also bright enough to pick up shit loads of Easter eggs the day after Easter. (20-25 dozen eggs) a shit load! I've made 3 batches before & gave them out to friends as test batches. Tonight batches are for sale. I ended up with 6 eggs of each kind....Sweet Pea, Dragon's Blood, "Relaxation", and Lavender. The Dragon's Blood ones fizzes red for the first few seconds. The lavender ones have flakes of dried lavender mixed in too.
I've knocked out 3 batches of sugar scrubs. Sweet Pea, Lavender & Peppermint.
I've got 7 kinds of soap, 3 bars each. Sweet Pea, Lavender & chamomile, White tea & ginger, Grapefruit, Dragon's Blood (again bubbles red the first time), Relaxation, and Oatmeal & Honey (shaped like little honeycombs). Some I used an aloe soap base & some I used a goats milk soap base.
I have to get more coconut oil and then I'll crank out sugar scrubs to match all the soaps. And I ordered more citric acid tonight so I can do the same with bath fizzies.
Tomorrow I'm making peppermint & episom salt foot scrubs. I have some fresh mint drying in the oven now for them.

LOL - the write-up/description of those are hilarious - especially the "Stoner" soap.
