I should say - I don't even hire teenagers to babysit my kids.. I either use adult friends (while in the AF and a thousand miles from family), or family, or don't go out.

I've run background checks on prospective tenants. Citizenship or immigration status has never shown up. I suppose one could ask to see a birth certificate; how else do you determine immigration status? And how many of you could produce a birth certificate instantly? If you've changed your name, you'd also have to produce a copy of your marriage record.
I don't think they should make exceptions; I also don't think they should send anyone to jail. A fine ought to be enough.

So how did you prove their citizenship?

The scenario here was for a babysitter. I hope you would put more thought into who is with your kids when you're gone than who is shoveling snow in your driveway...
There are lots of resources online where you can do an instant background check on someone for about $20 or less...criminal history, court documents, driving record, auto registrations, etc.
Just pointing out the obvious. Most of the illegals around here have 2 to 5 different names & many have documentation one at least 1 or 2 of them. Also to do a Internet search would mean that you assume that you have the right name & can pin that to the right person. Not as easy as it sounds.

It was worse because I homeschool and it was before i had to report to the state, so i had no school documents either. They said the child a birth certificate is issued for could have died and the birth cert been passed on, so they wouldn't accept it. I had to bring documentation from my pediatritian that my children had been in their care since birth, and were in fact my children... I don't know what would have happened if we hadn't had the same pediatrician since the beginning? It scared me actually... I reccomend to parents i know that they get children state id cards if they don't have a passport, so they have some kind of official ID... especially if they are homeschooling.

That's very odd. I don't doubt your story, but we also homeschool and had no problems getting passports for the kids with only their birth certificates. I think you may have gotten an overzealous clerk or something...sorry to hear about that.

Ok.. my husband says he thinks that was not the passport office... he thinks it was that we needed a replacement social security card for son? And they wouldn't accept his birth certificate, and required the doctor paperwork. That might be right, because i think i might have only done it for my son... and not had to do it for my daughter.

If you want to leave your child with somebody you haven't run a background check on or an illegal for that matter, that is your choice. I am just saying I would never do that. You are shifting the issue. You said the only responsible thing to do is verify everyone working in your household is legal. This isn't about whether or not I should run background checks because a person is caring for my children, this is about verifying a person is a legal citizen. I ask for details on how I would do this & get vague answers & people trying to shift the focus. As some others have pointed out - illegals can have fake documents, fake names, etc. Also, GG said that background checks don't contain a person's citizenship status. You said it is laziness to not have people in your household verified, yet have been unable to get me a straight answer on the process that would accomplish this. All I am trying to point out is that is there is a big difference between a business hiring employees & a individual hiring a household worker - a household worker doesn't necessarily someone on staff or someone that you even use regularly, it could be someone you hire one day to move some bricks for you. Right now, it is not reasonable to expect a household to be able to verify the status of everyone they hire. If the govt wanted to, then I'm sure they could set up a system where status could be verified quickly & easily, but until this is done, then it is unreasonable to expect that a common individual could accomplish this for every person they hire for small jobs.

I don't think they should exempt household employees, but I think they should simply make a distinction between an individual who hires an illegal and a business who hires an illegal, both might be subject to fines and penalties but for the individual it should be a simple misdemeanor.
Remember if you pay a household employee over a certain amount (maybe $1500) in a year you have to file with the IRS and pay payroll taxes, so you need to have there SSN or tax id, if the SSN was invalid I would hope the IRS would let you know.

I think exempting anyone and putting it on paper kinda waters down any argument they may bring forth against illegals and border crossings, but that is jmo. .
