In Carl's thread about what women want in a man, a common theme was having a "sense of humor."
But what exactly does it mean to have a sense of humor? Does it mean cracking jokes all the time, or sometimes? Does it mean having the ability to laugh at yourself and others? Does it mean you make the entire room laugh all the time? What makes this trait so endearing? Would you say you have a sense of humor?

I must, DH and I have stayed married for almost 20 years . It can be hard to define - one person's sense of humor may seem cold and uncaring to another. It's more about finding someone who laughs at the same sick, demented things that you do.

To me a sense of humor is being able to see the funny/lighter side of things no matter what the situation. Some people are just very literal. They rarely have a good sense of humor. My family has always been the type to laugh when things are horrible or awkward. That's just how we deal. I see the humor in most everything! I'm out of control but I blame you all.

It's easy to be mad at the world if you get upset about every little thing that goes wrong. On the other hand if you can find something funny in a crazy situation it makes you a lot easier to be around.
I try to make fun of myself and the stupid things I've done vs making fun of others (ok...MOST of the time). Pompous asses excepted.

Trying to define a sense of humor is like trying to define porn. You knows it when ya sees it. Except we can wave our sense of humor in people's faces. Although overly sensitive and literal people may find that offensive too. Here is an example of my sense of humor and my DH or one of my brother's. I'm on the left. DH would probably think that's mean depending on his mood. He's in engineering so it's expected. My brother would be on the left if it was about somebody else but not if it was at him. I'd crack up regardless of the side I'm on. I really need to make this my avatar. It suits me.

If you cultivate the ability to find humor in the ridiculous, it makes life one heck of a lot easier! Most stuff we think is devastating when it happens becomes the source of endless funnies over the years. Everyday humor, however, is a little different and can't be qualified quite so easily. What's funny to one might not be funny to another. The trick, as I see it, is to be able to credit the difference rather than judge and find it wanting.

One night we had to move stuff out of our kitchen as we were having new floors put in. Some time back we had put in new granite and on the breakfast bar the granite came out just a bit further than the old tile counter top. This caused the fridge to need the doors off to get it out which was a pain because one bolt naturally was in an awkward place and hard to get to. After finally getting it off and taking the doors off we put down cardboard and towels so as not to scratch the wood floor we put the fridge on. During this process I knocked stuff over because quite frankly I was lazy and didn't want to empty the fridge which caused a mess and I was about to lose it. I had walked outside to get some towels from the laundry room we used to wipe some stuff up and forgot I shut the screen which I was previously leaving open when I went outside. I promptly walked back into the screen, knocking it off the tracks, bending the screen and scraping my nose. My gf sat there looking at me trying not to laugh because she knew I was about to lose it already but she couldn't help it and eventually I was laughing too. Long story aside as others said a sense of humor is being able to laugh during those times when you almost want to scream hysterically and run away.

To me, it is having a similar sense of humor to someone else. There's the "three Stooges" kind that doesn't interest me at all. I have a very dry sense of humor and appreciate someone else who does too.

Like others have said it mainly is being able to laugh at yourself and not taking life too serious. What people think is funny varies greatly though. In general, I was raised in a family of people who love to laugh but it comes naturally. We poke fun at one another and laugh at ourselves for the silly things we do without thinking about it. My aunt's husband; however, has a totally different sense of humor. His idea of funny is to sit around telling corny jokes that in all honesty none of us find all that funny, and really you can only tell so many scripted jokes before it just starts to get stale. It's when someone does something silly and another person has an automatically funny response that they didn't even have to think about is what makes a person funny to me. If you have to TRY and be funny it really doesn't work too well. It's better to just be yourself.

Just not my type of humor, I suppose. Now The Big Bang Theory or Seinfeld (still watch the re-runs) is more my kind of humor.

The responses to this thread are interesting. I have a huge inner sense of humor and a sense of humor when it comes to my personal writing. Speaking though, I'm a dud. I never make people laugh (other than my kids, and probably not for much longer). I've always considered myself as NOT having a sense of humor though because I don't make people laugh during conversations. Maybe I need to rethink how I label myself.

I think sense of humor has a full spectrum. One area would be seeing the humor in the irony or twist.
Example: Monday and Tuesday preceed WTF.

I love to laugh...I work in a very high stress career but in follow the Fish Philosophy...we can either be miserable and absolutely hate each and every day or we can try to find ways to laugh. Luckily, my exec team are all hysterical so it makes the endless meetings fun (don't get me wrong, I still hate meetings!).
I don't understand very serious people. They actually make me uncomfortable. If you can't laugh at yourself or the little things in life, what's the point?

Okay, I think Apple's avatar is funny. She has the best avatars! Did you see the one before the one she has now? Where the little girl goes up to the statue and the statue reaches for her and the little girl takes off screaming and waving her arms? I LMAO just thinking about that one! The expression on her face and those arms waving...

Okay, I think Apple's avatar is funny. Thanks It makes me laugh! I think there are many, many different "brands" of humor. And I don't think you have to be a funny person to have a sense of humor at all. I'm a weird mix of super serious and easy to laugh. There are people at work who have never seen me laugh, and that's usually because I don't feel comfortable around them (because they are creepy or backstabbers). There are other people who have commented that they never see me not smile, and I laugh around them all the time. My son is a very literal, logical person. He has the most wicked sense of humor though. Sometimes it's very dry, intellectual or just super subtle, but he makes me laugh too. As long as you find something funny, you're probably doing ok

I have been thinking about an infants first sense of humor, what is funny to a really young baby and when they start trying to make others laugh. First seems to be surprises are funny so daddy or mommy hiding behind their hands then removing the hands makes babies laugh. Then something like a sneeze is funny anything unexpected once they aren't frightened. People make funny faces or noises break them up. I wonder how young humor starts do they need to be two or three months old or older?

But I am funny too. I admit I am more serious and less funny here as compared to RL. Harder to show off my humorous dance moves in posts on PB.
I aspire to be as funny as POM is on-line.

Me thinks there is humor with oneself, humor shared with another, humor in groups including humor while performing or public speaking. Humor is multi-dimensional.

I want to be as funny in real life as POM is online. Should I add this to my bucket list?? Geeze, I'm gonna have to live to 105 to clear out this list if I keep adding to it.

Does it mean you make the entire room laugh all the time? What makes this trait so endearing? Would you say you have a sense of humor? A sense of humor doesn't necessarily mean you can make others laugh, but it does mean that you can laugh at stuff. My in-laws had very little sense of humor. They did find a few things funny - but not the same stuff I thought were funny, so it is tough to connect. They never really laughed at any of my jokes, so the room would just get a little quiet and awkward. If I had to spend every day with someone who didn't think it was funny when the cat slid across the floor, or could laugh at the super-annoying song that is on the radio every 5 seconds - it would be a long miserable life. Another example: on Facebook the other day, I made a joke about comparing an apple and an orange. A friend of mine came back with the scientific explanation of how you can compare any two objects on the planet - and therefore the phrase "like comparing apples and oranges" makes no sense. And she wonders why we don't ever see each other.

I made the mistake of laughing the first time hubs farted in front of me. Big mistake! Lol. Farts can be funny. Hubs (and friend) yelling "happy birthday!" every time someone let one rip on my birthday, haha. Farting in the car in February? Not so much.

Okay, Apple, what the hell was a horse doing in what looks like an ER hallway? Honestly, I have no clue. I think the caption said "Cow (or bull) charging through hospital hallway" or something like that. I thought maybe it was a low cost way for insurance to determine how hurt someone *really* is
