At Least for the next two weeks the Dems and Repubs have reached a temporaty spending bill to avoid a shutdown but there is still a lot of work to do to narrow the differences over budget cuts by both parties

We'll see going forward. I think the WH wanted a month because if its not settled in 2 weeks, i don't think another extension is as likely? There are lines being drawn and ugly voices. The Tea Party caucus today was adamant about what they expect from new reps. Dems are also drawing lines with health care and planned parenthood... I'm not sure this will come to any kind of easy end...
And how long do they have before they have to vote to raise the debt ceiling?

I'm not entirely sure what actually happens if the government doesn't come to some sort of budget agreement. I'm assuming people still get paid....I can't see the government not paying the military, hospitals, etc.

And how long do they have before they have to vote to raise the debt ceiling? I would think that would be going backwards.

There is a good thread on YM about that... different types of employees are handled a bit different, and we'd have to make interest/debt payments... SS would go out, but no new claims processed, stuff like that...
I've read there is almost no chance that we won't have to raise the debt ceiling? But its not going to go over well with some factions... i'm thinking its going to get ugly...

The thing is, the current talks about 'cutting expenses' are just discretionary spending cuts... i think we could probably cut every single discretionary dollar and still not tackle the issue... we need to talk big three cuts... which INCLUDES military spending.

It's also interesting to note that the two week extension includes continued funding of Obamacare. Seems the republicans and some tea party members had to give in on that to keep the government running.

Yes, the extension covers the amounts the Republicans wanted... but in the way the Dems wanted... so i don't know how the Repubs are calling 'victory'? ... and i think that's why there was such an up in arms tea party caucus yesterday.

These cuts are just the tip of the ice berg. As oped noted we will need to make large cuts in many other areas to make any change in direction. These cuts will have to include military, entitlement programs, government employees, NASA just to mention a few of the untouchables. But does not change the need to also make every cut in discretionary spending possible also.

These cuts are just the tip of the ice berg.
This is akin to urinating in the Atlantic Ocean to raise the water level. Maybe someone here can verify this, but only nickel and dime cuts are being proposed, the year over year growth rate in these budget items is still in place.

I realized long ago that there is absolutely no way to make everyone happy. Even though there was compromise, both parties have something to claim "victory" on. No politician will ever have the same values, morals and beliefs as me. There's always going to be pros and cons with anything / anyone in DC. The best I (or anyone) can ever hope for is "close".
