And ask for a cheap flight. Wife and I want to get away for a few days. We were thinking about just walking up to the ticket counter and going where they said they could send us soon and cheaply. Think it will work?

I think I'd do my search on the internet vs showing up at the airport. No parking costs and you know what to pack! Or were you planning on buying your wardrobe there? That'll get on TSA's much loved list!

It seems most flights are overbooked these days...

Sounds like fun!
I think I am too much of a planner. I could book a destination a day in advance, but would at least want to pack right and know I have a plan when I arrive. Personally I would just search for last minutes deals online.

Would figure that there would be stores where we end up.

yea it will work - but I'm laughing because I can catch a flight from NY to NJ or NJ to DC I'd rather drive cause the flight is only into the next state or two. sitting around the airport waiting for that lottery win cheap flight is a bit of a gamble. nah - shop on-line

There are a couple web sites that will give a list of last minute cheap fares. You get an email sent Wed or Thur for a Sat flight, returning Sun or Mon. I think it was either Delta or United, you'd put in your home airport and they'd send you a list of cheap destinations.
I used to receive these to try to get out to Seattle, I probably was able to snag about 3 trips this way.
Fastest flight I did was back to Seattle from Albany last Jan. I made the reservation less than 90 min before the flight left.

What Mich said, Tenn. I've sometimes snagged an available seat for a quick get-away. Sometimes people have to cancel last-minute, and you luck out.

BTW.....my last minute flight was NOT cheap.
One thing to consider is that if you get away cheap, you may find it difficult to get back when you want to come back. Airlines are flying so full that a few years ago, I missed a flight out of Seattle. It took me 24 hours to get another seat on a flight.
These full flights make it really difficult for them to be flexible.

My friends did that. They ended up in Fort Lauderdale. But they already had tickets to Memphis and the flight got cancelled, so they wandered around the airport until they found a place that sounded good.
