For the first time I'm getting a bumper crop of fruit from my apple tree. They are all ripening at once and I need ideas on how to preserve them. I can only fit so many in the fridge and there are only so many pies I can make without turning us all into blimps. I will take some to work where they will promptly disappear but I would still appreciate your ideas. They are golden delicious if it makes a difference. I guess I might be willing to buy some canning equipment if anyone has good apple butter recipes...

Apple chips, apple butter, apple sauce! The chips can be done in the oven or a dehydrator, and the butter/sauce can be done in a crockpot. No need to can if you have the freezer space.

I know you can store apples for a couple months if you do it right. But that isn't always an option. Dehydrating is good.
Apple coleslaw waldorf salad making a "stuffing" to go with pork chops.

We too have a bumper crop of apples, for the second year in a row. Last year we invested in canning equipment (hot water bath) and canned applesauce and apple pie filling. There Is nothing better than opening up a can of applesauce at a meal knowing it came from our tree and not some anonymous tree! Unfortunately we didn't try apple butter so I can't help you there. Do Goldens make good sauce?
Last night I made apple crisp for 'zert and it was yummy.

Apple sauce, apple brownies, apple crisps. The apple brownie recipe is on the recipe board.
My apples are summer apples and softer than late apples. They brown incredibly fast when pared. Someone on this board gave me the vinegar bath to slow that down.
A friend is looking for crab apples to pickle. Most everyone I know have cut down their crab apple trees.

My grandmother used to go out and buy bushels of apples during season and she'd do apple butter, applesauce and apples for pies. Do you have a freezer? She always canned them, but I wonder how well processed apples handle freezing. You'd probably need to use some citric acid to keep them from turning brown. Citric acid is usually found near canning supplies.

I love canning and applesauce and apple butter is SUPER easy. you can get a started kit on amazon for $50 if you think it is something you'd like to do. I make a year's supply of pickles in around 2 hours. Apples take a little longer.

I have a dehydrator but have only used it for hot peppers which I then grind up.

Apple butter in the crockpot (or even on the stove) is easy. I used lemon juice on last year's apples. I'm just using the last of them from the freezer and they look as good as when they went in. I froze a bunch in quart bags and randomly make warm applesauce as a side dish with dinner. I second the precooking them a bit with cinnamon and sugar for pies. I freeze those in 8 cup batches. I also make a rustic tart thingy. Roll our one pie shell-I bake it on a baking stone. In a bowl mix apples and whatever other fruit (I use cherries a lot because I froze a bazillion of them) with a bit of sugar and cornstarch. Dot with some butter and pull the edges up enough to keep it from making a mess in the oven. Walla!!! I'm ready for this year's crop.

Bru ha ha. That will use up those apples from the trees.
I also had an apple tart recipe that used lemon jello. I'll see if I can find it. I will look tomorrow.
I also have a bread recipe that uses moist stuff like zuchinni and apples, etc.
