Since my Turks and Caicos vacation is a bust this year (wedding's been called off), we are kind of at loose ends as to where to go. I thought about going back to the resort during my spring break, but the price is 70% higher then. That's not gonna happen, for that price TD and I can go to Bora Bora and get one of those overwater huts!
We've gone to Playa del Carmen twice. The resort we go to (The Reef) is a very small, easily accessible (this is important for me) place with only 200 rooms. I think that the last time we went, 10 days + airfare at the AI was only about $2500 total, so it's very reasonably priced. This resort does have a good dive master on staff and TD wants to scuba dive. But we've gone here twice and want to try something different.
Criteria we need: Not a huge monster resort, reasonably priced, decent scuba diving in the area, nice beach, comfortable beds (this is kind of important too as I can't sleep on any bed anymore). We'd probably be looking to go the third week of March.
Any ideas/suggestions?

Maui. You are on the West Coast. It makes perfect sense.

I can't wait to hear about your responses. Our wedding anniversary is March 19th. I'd be interested in any place that doesn't have Spring Breakers.

Been to Maui before, not really interested in going there again.
I did some looking around Grand Cayman, but that is damn near as pricy as Turks. There is good diving in the Maldives, I've considered that too. But I'm trying to keep things a little cheaper, as we've talked about doing Scotland next September.

this is too funny - I am such a mess for this thread! I have never heard of Turks and Caicos! until last year when watching an episode of Kendra on Top TV Show. Ever since then I here it often. I have never heard of Bora Bora! until this year, maybe a few weeks back when watching the Price Is Right. I laughed for 2 minutes! Like Bora Bora is a prize trip! where the hell is that? then the pictures they showed - to me didn't look impressive. My first thought was to go somewhere new. But then again you have specific criteria so maybe going somewhere you have already been may be best. Best wishes on your decision!

I liked Maui when I was there - but that was back in the 80's and away from the "hustle and bustle" of tourists. We stayed with friends at their condo in Wailea which was pretty secluded from the madding crowds - we toured Haleakala Volcano, scube dived (I'm trained and certified) and other touristy stuff now and then, but the beaches and serenity there sure beat the hustle and bustle and big city glitzy troust-trap place that Honolulu's become.
Also spent a couple of weeks in Costa Rica - that was nice.
Probably the place I enjoyed most for an "island getaway" in recent years, was the Dominican Republic.
I'd highly recommend it - even for families.

You can afford to ho to Maui? Bless your heart. A few hundred bucks difference in cost should not make a difference.

I've thought about Costa Rica, do you have any idea what the diving is like there? I know that there is supposed to be decent scuba diving in Belize as well.
Sorry Archie....if I was considering going back to Hawaii, I wouldn't go to Maui but I'd go back to Kauai instead. I would not go back to Oahu at all, any more than I have any urge to go back to Athens.

We're not really resort people so I can't tell you if it's worth it. Last November we rented a little beach house in Anahola but that area has a lot of locals and it very, very quiet. Probably not what you're looking for but we sure enjoyed it.

Also I just heard about an area of Guatemala on the Caribbean side near Belize which has some good diving and fishing.
