in quickly developing situations. Merrillville Indiana police had a call for a suspect in an unoccupied condominium this weekend. Police were called out on the scene, entered the unit, and a 26 year old policeman was immediately shot in the head by the person, who had been previously been foreclosed on who broke back into his unit. The policeman as of Sunday was not expected to live.
The guy then turned his gun on himself and committed suicide. I really get tired of hearing about out of control police and "innocent victims". Yes, it does happen, but darn it, it works the other way too.

Yes, this is terrible, but isn't this kind of the risk you take in becoming a police officer? At any given time they could be killed just by being on the job. As citizens, we didn't sign up to be killed at any given time by those protecting us, just by being citizens.

Well I was wrong on his age. 24 years old. They took him off life support. The killer was in body armour waiting for police to come thru the door. It was an ambush. He was a guy who went off the deep end after losing his job, and foreclosed on, etc, etc. That makes three Indiana officers killed in the line of duty this summer Indianapolis lost an officer earlier this year as well as a Gary Officer. Merrillville is directly south of Gary, so that is two Lake County Indiana officers that have been killed this year in the line of duty. The Gary officer was executed sitting in his car near a domestic abuse call two hours earlier, white officer, black attacker. Almost similar to the Missouri situation except the cop was not able to tell his version of the incident. Shot thru the driver's window, but no sign of a struggle. The Merrillville killing was a white perpetrator on white policeman, in case you wondered......
dj, I wish I had the answer. I am just saying, I know they put their self out there, and sometimes they face the consequence. Not hard to understand why police can over react to a situation. Does not make it right, just understandable.

VB-do you have the officer's name or a current link to the story? If you know his name or have a link, could you post it please. Thanks.

Very unfortunate for the officer. The killer planned to die by either the police or his own hand.

Unfortunately he took the cop first. He wanted the authorities to suffer just as he had. Sick mind(s).

Two guys just killed a Topeka officer over the weekend shot him during a traffic stop. They have the guys in custody now. I have many friends and family that are police/fire/water patrol/highway patrol. No way in hell you could pay me enough to put up with the shit that they have to, let alone the danger. I think being a police officer is tough in more ways than one. I agree with Valuby that I can understand how situations like this can put officers on edge. I can see how an officer dealing with riots like in Ferguson can get scared. It's easy to play Monday morning quarterback and tell cops what they should have done from a safe office building. I'm not saying this excuses the police from wrongdoing, but it's a tough job.
And people in these situations always watch the cops. Imagine doing your job and always having someone shove a camera in your face. Many police are now starting to have to wear cameras. Again, I can see useful benefits to this, but between the danger, politics, and public scrutiny, it's not a job I'd want to do.

If I were a cop, I would WANT to wear a camera. Then you wouldn't have these he said/she said kind of arguments. There are plenty of times when a suspect is drunk/high/stupid and he ends up getting roughed up while being subdued, then cries 'police brutality.' I would want to be protected against that kind of BS.
There was a cop on Judge Judy a while ago who was suspended and investigated due to a woman complaining that he sexually harrassed her during a traffic stop. He had video from his cop car that showed the traffic stop, and in fact the woman first tried to flirt her way out of a ticket, and then tried to name drop a friend of hers that was a judge. When neither worked (the cop remained professional throughout) she got all pissy. Very, very clear there was no harrassment at all. That video saved the cop from being in trouble due to that idiot woman.
Not all cops are honest cops, although most are. Honest cops don't have anything to fear from wearing a camera. Besides, even if they DON'T wear one, they're going to be filmed by bystanders, if anyone else is around. Better to have your own footage of the incident from start to stop then a few violent minutes captured at the end by someone else.
