judge-must-say-shes-sorry-just-not-in-cuffsJoan Melvin was convicted of theft, conspiracy and other charges in 2013 for using court staff and other public workers to aid her campaigns for a seat on the court. In addition to house arrest, her sentence included a fine, work in a soup kitchen and the letters to about a thousand judges as well as members of her former staff who did illegal work for her at her behest. The photo requirement did not extend to the letters to be written to staff members. house arrest? NO JAIL time! write I'm sorry letters! and she didn't want to do that! WOW must be great to be apart of the good ol' boys club!

Seems she lost her career...I would think that she probably was disbarred too being a felon...as far as the sentence, not every crime always has the convicted serving hard time..jail time..This was a non violent first offense crime..I am guessing up to this time she had a good record of service etc thus the decision of three years house arrest..{ that sounds serious punishment..} then two years probation...that sounds severe to me..not really sure what she did beyond possible forcing others to work for her election to..no stealing of public funds ...as said, no violence...sentence seems a fair one..severe but still allow her to get on with her life...such as it is...disgraced , embarrased with her peers..no problem , from what I know about the case with the sentence..Possible there is more to it then what i can get out of googling... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Orie_Melvin

I don't live in the US, so I'm not 100% clear on the judicial or legal system there Desi, but aren't Judges (Federal and Supreme Court) Judges appointed by the Government, and Civic or State Judges officials, that are elected by public vote -elected the same way as Civic or State politicians are?
And what charges (if any) have been brought against her former staff who "did illegal work at her behest"?
