I haven't personally seen, it but anyone I've spoken to who has, have all given it rave reviews. Pretty impressive cast as well.

IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes both have it poorly rated. Is this one just well-liked by the religious folks?

I don't know the answer to your question. As far as the actual quality of the movie in the 'Oscar' sense it drags a bit in places.
As far as the message from the movie, it's great. I like feel good movies, and this is a feel good.

Colton Burpo's story has been debunked six ways from Sunday. First of all, don't you have to dead to get into heaven? This kid never died, never flat-lined. He was very sick, but not dead. The powerful drugs he was administered are very capable of producing hallucinations, like the rainbow horse that is almost identical to a child's toy...the rainbow My Little Pony. Furthermore, he saw Jesus, who looked a blue-eyed European? Not likely. His dad is a pastor and the hallucinations are very indicative of what imagery the child was previously exposed to. The story was embellished over time, mostly with prompts from the child's father ("I'll bet you wished you had a sword, didn't you?" The kid replied it was too dangerous. Really? There's danger in heaven?) In any case, this is an obvious hoax. That being said, I do go to religious movies from time to time. I went to see Noah, which I really liked, but it didn't try to pass itself off as the truth and didn't proselytize. It was a nice fantasy film. Those Watchers, or rock monsters, were a thing of terrible beauty.
