Wow, I had a positive surprise today. I had made a mistake on my 2009 tax return, and had to file an amended return. As the result, I got a few bucks back. Today, after just four weeks, a check arrived. And, to my surprise, the IRS had automatically added interest to it, 3.1%. Not bad, considering the bank rates in the last 12 months! At first, when looking at the check, I thought it was just another scam as the amount was not what I had expected. After inspecting the check a little closer, I saw in small print: interest added: $xx.xx. So that included, it was exactly the correct amount. There was nothing else but the check in the envelope, it almost ended up in the fireplace!

They will do that if they delay your refund too long also. I had interest added the year it took over 6 months to get my refund check.
The real fun is that they will tax you on that interest when you file next year.
