Our retirement accounts hit a new milestone during the month of February! Part of it was that I vested in the last step of my 401k match, but our accounts jumped over the $200k mark for the first time.
We are bogleheads. We invest in low cost indexed mutual funds, when available, and use some target funds.

Thanks.
My wife has her ROTH in a target. I don't, but I have thought about it. i think our overall bond weighting is between 5-10%, which is good, i think.

Archie Something to watch in those target funds is how much of the bond side is in long duration. With target funds, they pretty much ignore interest rate risk of the bond market because of their long term focus. That leads them to have more emphasis on longer bonds for distant target dates like yours is likely to be. Of course that raises the spectre of Bogle's arch-enemy, Market Timing.

I know I am not smart enough to time the market... so why try?

Verrip, Yes but I know some BarBELL investors that invested heavy in the bonds market.. 30 year zero's in the 1980.. Now are just starting to get the asset converted to cash as they produced a 13.5% return for 30 years with a SD of 13.8%. OK they made about 14.8% on the 20% invested in stocks as they were very aggressive in stock picking. BarBell = 80% bonds and 20% stock/options. Bruce

Archie,
Congrat's to you .. Keep up the good work..My number one goal for my 401k was to profit from aggressive investing to the point where I have more profits then original investment.. hard to do over the last 10 years except zero's from the 1980's. My orginal self employment retirement from 1973 did the best over all so far.. I have not tuched a single penny.. yet from this account. I have seen the studies on the 100% stock allocation with average in and average out.. Over 50 to 60 sixty years this looks best.. Lower risk then you might think as most people think volatility = risk.. No , loss of capital = risk and if you sell at the bottom that is a risk.. So the system takes bravery... You are 100% invested 100% of the time.. I like the 60/40 better of 50/50 as you move from the high market to the low market about two times a year on average.

Bruce re #6:
Can't argue against zeros when interest rates are high. Thirty year Treasuries at 18% held to maturity from back then weren't bad either. I guess they either have or shortly will all hit maturity. Nice ride though.

Verrip1, Yes, There is a tough question.. 4.67% rate for the 30 year T-Bond..My current average for coupon bonds is 7.777778%,, Held to maturity.. Sure is not an easy call but it looks good vs 2.68% in 2008. Is inflation under control??? AS far as oil goes it is a mater of time before we have major systems to make oil from Algae.. Exxon is investing Billions into it. It is a bet.. Like the 60/40 Effecent Frontier but A++ Expert system is at 35% Bonds.. Time will tell but QE2 was too small to make any differance. Remember .. this is a trading system that is dynamic!!! Just a thought, Bruce...

I don't like target funds, but don't tell Frank or he'll have one of his hissy fits.

I'm just kidding about retiring.. I just hate writing that I have 30+ more years until I retire. It is hard to imagine.

The weird thing is, you always feel the same inside...the outer world is what changes. If you have kids, enjoy their childhoods because it flies by. If not, get some good good hobbies to counteract the work world. It does help.

I have a daughter who is amazing and she has a sibling on the way! The diaper/car seat days can be exhausting ..so busy...don't forget it's family that matters. Jobs and material goods can come and go. Once they hit 6th grade...the next thing they are doing is driving and then it's off to college. Love them up , bunches ! ( I'm sure you do)
