A child can be left in your car alone at the same age they can be left in your home alone. Never. I can't leave my 20, almost 21, year old home alone? I don't understand. At 20 years old your kid would be out of school for two years. Why would they still be living in your home?

I left my kids in the car alone all the time. The funniest time was several years ago when I had a Volvo with a motion detector/car alarm. I forgot about it, shut the car off and went into the store. The kids moved and the alarm went off, for a long time while I was in the store. The kids could have cared less, and anyone passing by just kept on walking.
My boys are 13-16 and we have left them alone in the car since they were old enough to not be in a car seat. Never gave it a second thought.

Why would they still be living in your home? because they're still in college.....I guess you're one of those 'children must move out the day they turn 18' people? My home address was my parent's house until I graduated college and moved into my own place. it's really not that hard of a concept to grasp.

I let my 11 and 9 yr old stay in the car when I go into the grocery store. I leave the car running and they lock the doors once I get out. My 11 yr old has assured me that he can beat anyone up who tries to break into the car... I'm not sure that's entirely true. But I remember being that age thinking I was invincible.
Anyway, I agree with you. I think it's okay when the kid is old/confident enough to leave the car and go inside to find their parent.

I'm 34, I can't be left alone in my parents' home? I don't live there, but sometimes they want me to come take care of their dog when they're away. I should probably start bringing a chaperone. I'm genuinely curious, what do you propose happens if you have an 18 year old senior in HS and the parents want to go out and do something? Do they have to bring the 18 year old along everywhere they go? Hire a babysitter for their HS senior? I can't imagine the kind of planning it takes to make sure a responsible teenager is never in the home alone...ever.

Then being booted out at 18 to make their way.

I don't know. Judging by the judging on here, you can't leave them alone ever because by the time they can be left alone, they can't be because they'll throw parties in your absence!
