I'm loving these customer from hell stories. I wish I had one of my own to add but I had a very low retail tolerance. I think milee's story takes the cake though. What a dick.

Can you imagine doing that for adults? "I need something for a 45 year old man. What do you recommend?" "what does he like?" "I don't know...don't you just have stuff 45 year old men like?" That's actually a lot easier to figure out than what a 10 year old girl likes . Yup! Does he drink? Beer of the month club. Does he eat? Sausage of the month club. Does he like girls? Men's magazine of the month club. Does he like cars? Ticket to a Barrett-Jackson auction. Does he like blowing things up? Whatever explosives you can get your hands on. Atomatic weapons are good, too. Does he like hanging out with his guy friends? Beer of the month club. Is he atheletic? Prepaid appointment with a cardiologist, orthopedist, or physical therapist. He likes to drink, eat, and likes girls? OK, all the chicken wings he can eat at Hooters.

Coworker got a phone call today -patron's library card is blocked, she can't use it, and her 2 yo son would REALLY like to visit the library, and her 4yo son is going into the hospital and would REALLY like to have some books to read there. Look up her account - she never returned 3 books due TWO YEARS AGO, so they were assumed lost and she was billed the cost of the books. She either owes $35 for the lost books, or $15 for the max overdue fines of $5 per child's book if she returns the books. She has two of the books and a similar book she wants us to accept in place of the last one, and she wants all of the fines forgiven! Two of these books were only weeks or months old when she checked them out, and she's kept them for two years. It is not that hard, people! Return the books on time, or renew them, and we will never fine you, you can get tons of things over and over for free. If you want a few books for your kids to keep forever, we sell donated books, cheap (.25 for children's books). P.S. If you are a regular, and bring your kids to Story Hour often, we waive fines, since we know we will eventually get our stuff back, I mean see you again soon. When you disappear for two years, keep our new stuff two years, and want to get your card reactivated so you can take out more stuff, forgive us for wondering whether we'll ever see you again.

I always ask stupid questions by prefacing it with, "I know this is a stupid question, but..." Does that make it any better for you people working in customer service? I do this a lot.

My favoritest overdue library story is the couple that had their mortgage delayed because of their overdue library materials. Boy were they pissed. As was the guy who got pulled over for speeding and when the cop ran him, found an outstanding warrant due to overdue library books (I think our investigator filed charges for non-return of materials over a certain dollar amount but it's been over 8 years since I left the library and 12-13 since I worked a public service desk)
