So, of course being the curious soul that I am, when I heard about some testing site for illegal drugs run by a Dr. X of Spain ( to establish purity and whether you're getting what you paid for ! ), I went to find out all about this Deep Web / Tor stuff.
The story on the financial news channel ( either CNBC or MSNBC ) talked about Tor and Deep Web, and showed a drug marketplace. I went to the internet on Google to do my search. Low and behold, I found a guy on youtube named Takedownman who has over 2200 videos about the Deep Web and how to access it.....
I can download a browser called Tor, get an anonymouse IP, and then potentially proceed to access guns and other weaponry, drugs, identities, paypal and credit card accounts which have been hacked, get a hit on someone done, find a new identity, up to and including citizenship, access unbelievable amounts of porn, including of minors, buy counterfit money, launder my money into bitcoins, access something called HiddenWiki, which is amazing, and use a search engine called Torch, which is supposed to be better than Google, and faster, plus it supposedly doesn't store your search history.
I could get onto this thing in five minutes. It's worldwide, and completely unsuppressed. I'm not advocating suppressing it. I am putting this out here as information. If someone in your life is getting drugs from you know not where, your credit is getting trashed for some unknown reason, weird things are happening to your bank accounts, or somebody is harassing you at a very high level, this is probably what they're working with.
There's even a site on there called " Pink Meth " that uploads the sexting and facebook nude pictures sent by foolish young things, and then gets all the info about them, such as names addresses, phone numbers, and facebook profiles, and away the bad guys go !
I'm not posting a link to this stuff, but I am posting a link to the youtube video, so you can all inform yourselves. I'm not scared of it, since I'm law-abiding, and hopefully don't have anyone harassing me. But, ordinary people need to know what's going on. Also, if you see a Twitter symbol on the Deep Web, it's not Twitter. It's child porn.

TOR (The Onion Router) was actually developed by, and is sponsored by, the US Navy. It has very legitimate uses, such as for those living under an oppressive dictatorship, to access or share information that may otherwise get them killed. Then on the other hand the NSA is trying to break it.
The downside is that there is the whole hidden darkside. Which is probably exaggerated a lot. The guy who ran the Silkroad website was arrested within the past year. Used to run it out of the local library.

There was an interesting article in "Time" magazine about all of this, I think some time last year. I don't recall when or I'd reference the issue, but it was quite informative.

I would love to access it just to look at the totally illegal ( not porn ) sites. The Silk Road website did look very interesting in the video. I just think that many internet users, especially older ones, have no idea that stuff like this exists, which is why I put it out there. I have the ability to look at the possibilities without going to the dark side, unlike many. But parents need to know about this stuff.

For inquiring minds... This is some ancient history (from the 1990's, but the story of Phil Zimmerman and his PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption software is quite interesting. It offers some insights into the yin/yang of government bureaucracy and need for control, which has really gone into overdrive post-911. And these two guys are quite interesting to follow: krebsonsecurity.com/ and (this guy is an expert) Bruce Schneier www.schneier.com/

I thought the NSA had already hacked TOR and that was how they took down the silk road.

Maybe so, but a story on the test site for the illegal drugs was on one of the financial news networks today. I think that Silk Road was taken down, but the network is still extant, per jras' posts. I don't know if Silk Road is gone. I didn't actually get on the Deep Web/Onion/Tor thing, I just watched the video, which is a couple of years old.
