And it's going to be a doozy with him being in preschool full-time this year, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know there will still be summers for awhile after that, but seriously it will be a RELIEF. I'm just pumping myself up after realizing I'm going to have to pay nearly $1300 for childcare next month when normally it's more like $450. (5 Fridays at regular daycare, $210 deposit at preschool and $495 for September...ouch.) ONE MORE YEAR!

If you homeschool your kids there will be no bills at all. and there won't be a house to live in or food to eat or clothes to wear as she's the only source of income.

Yes! The light at the end of the tunnel. We have two more school years to get through, and we'll have $500-600/month to use in a different way. I cannot wait.

Ugh. It might even be worse than I thought. I assumed the deposit was $210 because that's what it was last year, but apparently it's one month's tuition which is then applied to the last month. Last year he just went two days a week and I only paid $210/month. Looks like August will be over $1500 for childcare expenses. It's like living out east! Then all the back to school supplies and snack fees... AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH ok, I'm composed again. Just one more year. Just one more year. Just one more year....

If you homeschool your kids there will be no bills at all. No bills at all? No mortgage? No utilities? No insurance? I would love to know how this works. I had considered leaving him in the van while I was at work with some Sesame Street DVDs and preschool workbooks, but apparently that's a bad idea. Same thing with park with cell phone, nixed that plan after recent media circus.

I'm stuck with goats or chickens for daycare.

Woohoo! August is a 3 paycheck month. 3X - $720 = $2160 - $1500 for daycare. I'm still in the black (Thankfully, I haven't made any claims on my dependent care FSA yet this year so there's nearly 3K in there)

YAY! 1 year ago we wrote our last daycare check. It is an awesome feeling. I remember counting down the paychecks because I wrote daycare every other week when we got paid.
Yes, there are summers to contend with, but that is a drop in the bucket compared to year-round daycare.

Yes, there are summers to contend with, but that is a drop in the bucket compared to year-round daycare. Especially since all my parents and stepparents are retired now. By summer of 2016 DS will be 6 and I'm sure they'll more than likely be willing to take him quite a bit. Right now they take the 12 year old probably 4 weeks out of the summer between them. People always say other things replace daycare, but I still think it will be a significant boost when it's gone.

Well, preschool is all day. It replaces daycare and (if I were able to get away with no after school care), they are almost identical in cost. $495/month vs. an average of $466. After school care could bump it up as much as $160/month more, but I'm hoping to minimize that as much as possible. It is an incredible school and I'm very lucky to have access to it as a free K-8 charter. Along with having a sibling there, it ups his odds in the lottery next spring if he's a Children's House student this year, so that's part of the reason he's going. He did Tues-Thurs last year and just loved it.

I've had my son in private school, sports, a charter school in another town, and in drama club. I've never come close to what I spent on daycare! I'd bet the years to come will be much less expensive for you.

Congrats, MPL! Power through this last year! The thought of no longer having a $975/month daycare bill makes me want to get my tubes tied right now

Congrats on getting so close.
3 more years at $2,300/month. that will be a nice expense to drop! Holy crap. I'll quit whining now. That's a lot of money...

So thankful that we've worked out the daycare arrangements that we have. Should only be about $900/m for both kids once I go back in January. Even that is giving me twitches!

It'll be $870 a year for us for the next two years. So glad we decided to move Gwen to public pre-school so all we need for her is before/after school care. Otherwise we'd be looking at $1175 for the next two years. Some days I wonder what I was thinking when I decided to have another kid. It would have been nice to only be paying $245 a month for child care.

Infant care in our city is now up to 1600/month. Toddlers/3yo sit about 1400.
If DH worked full time, he'd have to net 4K/month to cover our kid daycare/afterschool/summer costs. Only 700 of that is private school tuition.
And I live in a MCOLA.

My BIL told my DH this weekend that they have spent $3500 so far this summer on all day care for my niece and nephew this summer. They will be in 3rd grade and 4th grade. He is looking forward to them being old enough to stay home alone during the summer. He is also a big fan of modified school schedules that have a 6 week summer instead of the 12 week summer we get in the Midwest.

But the rates at the four daycares I toured were $165/week, $220/week, $240/week, and $250/week. (DD's was $220/week but they switched to monthly billing and tacked on about $40). The $240/week was for the state-run daycare - normally $250, but state employees get a $10/week discount, wahoo!

Older son only attends things about half the time now and a couple of the camps he pays for himself (like scouts). Next week he is a counselor in training at Invention Camp, but still has to pay. Only $130/week instead of over $200/week though. I made a spreadsheet factoring in maximum after school care (it tops at $180/month). It's not quite as dramatic a drop as I thought, but still can't wait.

Congratulations, I always said you get a raise when they get out of diapers and again when you are done with daycare. That lasts until around age 16 when they start driving, then all bets are off.
You will get there MPL! Keep you eyes on the prize!

I paid $241 for before and aftercare for 2 kids many years ago (kids are now almost 21, 19 and almost 16). but they fed them breakfast and snacks and were open great hours so it worked well for me.
