We are in a short term rental. I am sitting in the kitchen watching tv. The owners paid over $1 million for this house in January. A mouse keeps poking its head out from under the forced hot water heating system, LOL. Just waiting for the puppy to catch wind of the mouse...or the mouse.

Oh boy. A million dollar mouse ! And here I'm looking at $ 23,000 Hud homes in a slightly different city than we usually consider, and hopefully, the house is mouseless.

You should probably try to get rid of it. Mouse poo is a vector for the Hanta virus.

Goldenrulegirl,
You need to report it ASAP since you've just moved in. You don't want to be blamed for attracting a nuisance already present.
Make sure you secure all food stuffs including picking up the dog food as soon as s/he is finished. Pet food can be a major attraction for rodents. Ask me how I know?
I know they are cute but mice can also do a lot of damage. You need to jump on this issue ASAP.

Well if I was a mouse I would want to live in a big nice house, not a run down shack. I don't think dogs are good at catching mice (mine never were), they would just bark. Cats are better. Or better yet mouse traps. I would do this ASAP.

Would you like to rent a house? Would you share it with a mouse?
Would you pet it on your lap? Would you catch it in a trap?
(Sorry, Dr. Suess keeps going through my head.)

I know they are cute but mice can also do a lot of damage. You need to jump on this issue ASAP. And you've only SEEN one. Usually if you've seen one mouse, there are probably more that you haven't. We saw what we thought was one mouse for several days, we laid out traps and ended up catching six.

Kill it. Kill it now.
Where I work we have mice all the time. I used to be all " oh aren't they cute", but then one day you walk in to find your desk covered in poop. There isn't enough disinfectant in the world to make you feel better. And then the SOB's die in the wall and they smell up the entire place for weeks. But, no fear, they had babies before they died so the cycle repeats.
Sad when you can walk in the building and the first thing you say is " F@#% another one died" and your only catching the first hint of a smell because like a blood hound, you've learned to recognize the stench.
KILL IT NOW.

If you are in a rental, I'd report this to the management company as soon as possible.
Set some traps if you think you can "handle" them. Do not poison them. That's when they go places you don't want them to in order to die. If you saw what I had to do to "handle" a mousetrap, you'd crack up. It requires a shoe box, a piece of cardboard, and a trashbag. All that is for ONE mouse.
We live in front of a field, and we occasionally get them. The dog is worthless, and I'd be terrified, anyway, if she caught one. What if she tried to eat one?

They sell humane live traps for mice. You catch the mouse and then "rehome" it somewhere far away, outside.

I can send my cat over. He kills at least one every night, and his highest kill rate was 3 in one night.

And two Bats (they were still alive). And some squirrles. Many many opossums too, the first one she killed when she was a puppy and it was bigger than she was! No lizards though, she left those alone. She's chase the frogs but wouldn't kill them.

DS has a maltipoo that kills mice, if she can find them. She did have a cat that found them and the dog would kill the mice. Cat got run over and dog can't locate the mice.

These boards are AWESOME!!!!!
Where else will people offer their beloved pets to a complete stranger to battle a tiny little field mouse who has probably been living here undisturbed for months (owners bought it over the winter and haven't lived here at all since). (My wacky sense of humor imagines the mouse telling HIS friends about the people he suddenly found living in HIS house, LOL.)
Thank you all for your offers. But, my little whiskered friend hasn't been seen since that night. The puppy did see him briefly, but doesn't understand the conduit nature of FHW covers, so the mouse made a clean break.
