DH wanted to get me a pair of Really Nice sunglasses for my birthday...I think a big part of the inspiration was figuring if I knew they were expensive, I wouldn't lose them like all my other sunglasses. Also, that maybe I'd stop borrowing his! Anyway, we went to the store, and I tried on lots of pairs of $200-400 designer sunglasses. And they sucked. Really and truly, I couldn't tell the difference between Dior and Prada and the $10 pair from the gas station...except that sometimes the $10 pair from the gas station has polarized lenses (apparently, real designer ones never do). So what I'm looking for is an explanation of why people pay that much for pieces of plastic? That aren't even particularly comfortable? (Oh, the end of the story is that I got a pair of Maui Jims, which at least have high-quality lenses and didn't feel like they'd give me a headache in 5 minutes or less, for the relatively bargain price of $160. We'll see whether that helps with the constantly-misplacing issue.)

because everyone should have a pair of sunglasses that cost more than the kindle Different strokes for different folks, but it baffles me why people spend a lot of money for "a label". I find it odd that this commercial tries to make the woman look "smart" by having spent less on a kindle than on a pair of designer sunglasses - didn't make me want to run out and get a kindle.

I do buy expensive sunglasses. However, I don't ever buy them full price, and I wear very classic styles. I keep them for years. I figure it all evens out in the end rather than buying 20 pairs of cheap sunglasses than having 1 pair for 4 years. I also feel the same with handbags. Since my style is very classic, I rely on my accessories to keep me fashionable.

See, I can totally get behind paying more for quality. I just didn't see any indications whatsoever that the designer sunglasses were higher quality than random non-designer sunglasses *shrug* I can also totally see using one pair of very nice classic sunglasses for years. Generally can't do it myself because I lose and misplace sunglasses like no one's business! My general MO is to have four or five pairs hanging around on the theory that at any one time, hopefully I'll be able to find at least one pair.

Once I bought my first pair of expensive glasses (a pair of Versace on amazon.com with the help of a $200 gc) I was so paranoid about losing them that I really took pains to care for them. The sunglasses came in a pretty case with a cloth to wipe them. I made sure that every time I took them off I put them in the case and into my purse. Now it's just a habit.

Last spring I spent $200 on a pair of nice wrap ray bans, prescription. Money very well spent for me! my old prescription sunglasses were ugly and crap so I'm quite happy to have nice suns for once. I take great care of them so hopefully they'll last me until my prescription changes... which should be at least a few years!

Prescription sunglasses cost the earth. Mine easily cost $500.00 and are worth every penny when one loves the out of doors and has optic nerve issues. DH and I finally got pescription sunglasses one year when we had money left in the Medical Spending Acct. and it was use it or lose it. The eyeglass franchises tend to point you over to the rack of designer frames, then "upsell" fancy coatings on the lenses, and mine were $400. I think DH's were cheaper- he showed them his old frames and told them to get something like those and they took frames out of a drawer. We're very happy with them. We've had them for a couple of years and they're still comfortable and holding up well. If we didn't need the prescription lenses we'd be wearing ones from the beach shops we visit when we go to Myrtle Beach every year.

ok, so I am a sunglass snob. I have taught my son to be a sunglass snob. Mauii Jims has been my personal favorite for many years now, DS favors Oakley, Persol as well Mauii Jim. High quality polarized lenses protect the eye from sun damage, cuts glare ... you get what you pay for. For the folks who have fear of losing their sunglasses, I don't get it. My son started wearing Oakleys when he was around 8 yrs old... he hasn't lost a pair of sunglasses yet. Is it really that difficult?

I left my $118 Coach sunglasses on a bus. I've only purchased $20 & under pairs since. I like the Steve Madden's I got at Stein Mart for $13.99, but they have a huge scratch on one lens that I can't get rid of. I like aviator style glasses, with a slightly sturdier frame. And they have to have visibility on the sides for when i'm driving.

I wear prescription glasses. The last time I bought them I also purchased sun glasses that fit over my regular glasses. They are called 'fit-overs' and cost $50. In fact I bought 2 pair and keep one in each vehicle.
For bike rides I use the shades that are given after catarac surgery. They fit over my regular glasses. Works for me.

I break or lose my sunglasses all the time too! Since I agree that the more expensive ones aren't necessarily better, I just go ahead and buy 2-3 pairs every year. Surprisingly, I've found the best selection and prices at Ace Hardware. Usually, 4-5 dollars per pair.

I also have some older Oakleys from my biking days. They might be antiques by now.

DH used to work at a high-end clothing store. One night a female customer left a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses in the dressing room... 3 weeks later, nobody had come to claim them, so the manager told DH he could have them They were really well-constructed (all metal), never got a scratch or ding despite being dropped embarrassingly often, and I wore them every sunny day for almost 2 years before I lost them. That was over a year ago and I still miss those babies! I'm extremely clumsy, but those sunglasses were indestructible. I'd buy another pair if I could just figure out how to not lose things...

I don't bother with sunglasses. I have glasses that I need to see and can't really wear contacts. Nor can I afford them now anyways. When I did wear contacts I would just go over to the dollar store and grab a pair that didn't look too bad on me. No way I would spend $$$ on sunglasses....but hey...I'm cheap.

I have had my Maui Jims for 12 years!!!! I love the spring hinges (no headaches) and polarized glass lenses. I haven't had to replace any lenses and have very little if any scratches on them. I had laser eye surgery 12 years ago, and my doctor told me to make sure I protect my eyes. I also bought a pair of Costa Del Mar's two years ago, but still prefer my Maui Jims over them.
Justwhoever - The sun can do just as much damage to your eyes as your skin. There are numerous studies on eyesight and sun damage as people age.
