Good thing they have some that are soft or mushy for when our teeth go bad?

And if she actually read the whole label she'd see that pet food is not human consumption grade materials. Lunatics or Fanatics?

I think the lady in the first article was pushing to get more human-consumption-grade food items for pets. Maybe she thinks it's safer? Or maybe she's planning for her retirement Who knows. I've seen dogs eat a whole bunch of things that I would never attempt to eat, but then again kids are just as gross.

You can eat it and it won't hurt you according to my husband who works in the food industry. You just don't WANT to. It's the lowest of the lowest of the lowest of the lowest grade product.
Basically it's whatever is leftover that doesn't make the cut for human sales. You can still eat all that stuff, but companies aren't going to make a profit selling it to humans so it goes to the pet industry instead.

I have 2 dogs that are 50 lbs. They get normal grade Purina or other similar grade pet food. Not the el cheapo brand, one grade higher than that. If I fed them the all Nutural refrigerator, natural pet food, they would be eating more "healthy". But then I would be spending so much money, I would be eating cat food (cheapo version) in retirement.
I love my dogs, but they are dogs. They have been known to eat dog poop, so that tells you what they want to eat!

I find it interesting to see what people on the Alaska shows feed their sled dogs. They indulge a chunk of a whole fish or some other animal. And, those are working, very fit dogs. My dogs foraged when they were abandoned. They still do it. When the mustard weed was growing they would walk around and eat them all day. They eat root and all, and avoid the "non-edible" weeds. They also have amazing skill to pluck the ripe gooseberries off the plants. Those suckers have wicked thorns but they use their lips and pull off the ripe ones!

My grandpa never got grapes off his vines, because the dogs would eat them all! And they loved the gooseberries too. Our dog was always eating the garlic that grew in the back yard.

I have a friend who cooks his dog chicken and rice every night. The dog never eats dog food. I found organic dog treat recipes in a magazine. I really need to send those to him.

We went through a period where our mutt was eating this for about 3 months. He had some GI issues and the chicken and rice was easy enough on his stomach to help staunch the massive diarrhea. While the vet said that this was a good stop gap measure, it did not provide everything he needed for very long term unless he we were supplementing with other things. When the choice comes to doing regular butt washes on a long haired dog or cooking chicken and rice, you cook!

She used to do that all the time. Of course, I didn't care, because we always have so freaking many tomatoes that by August I was just throwing them for her like tennis balls anyhow.

Our dogs (GSD and lab/beagle) get Purina but we throw in chicken, beef or pork rather than canned dog food. Also the breeder said yogurt or cottage cheese for calcium to help ward off hip problems. They LOVE strawberries! When I am slicing they get the ends and bits and race each other for them. I admit it to making chicken or turkey soup for them with the carcass and I throw in a bag of frozen veggies, then mix it with dry dog food. I guess they are pretty spoiled for outside dogs. Typing this I reaize they DO eat better than we do some days!

We had a dog that as she got very elderly she stopped eating her normal chow. The vet said to feed her whatever she wanted. So each night she got pasta with meat sauce (no onions or garlic).
When Gomez (my cat) was failing, he adored roasted chicken. So I'd roast up a huge package of chicken leg quarters from Sam's (this was usually 2 sheet pans full of meat), pull the meat off the bone, chop it up and store it in the freezer in serving sized baggies. That was about a 6 week supply for him.

My dog eats grain-free. Is it weird that I buy her the chicken-and-sweet potatoes but not the salmon-and-sweet potatoes because I don't care for the taste of fish?

Most pet food manufacturers also add extra nutrients specifically for your pet (cat, dog, gerbil, whatever) that aren't necessarily good for the human diet.
Stick to feeding your pet a recommended pet food, and feed yourself food from your grocer.
