DS3 (16) is leaving for the US this week, first to his friend's Dad's house in CA, and then to my family in NY.
Both his host in CA and one of my nieces BBQ a lot. My other niece doesn't BBQ but her husband loves steak and I tend to get them the same gift since I don't see them often. So, I got 3 nice boxed sets of Laguiole steak knives. The sets are boxed and sealed.
But now I'm getting nervous. I KNOW the knives have to go in checked baggage, as does DS3.
But do you think he could have a problem?
I don't have time to exchange them for other gifts, plus, I chose them because I think they will really be appreciated. But now I'm having doubts about the logistics and getting nervous that DS3 might be hassled.
I researched this on the internet and from what I can tell, as long as they are checked, he shouldn't have a problem.
Any thoughts?
ETA: They are all gift wrapped. Also gift wrapped are a box of candles and a kite for the young boy and 3 baseball caps. So, in theory, people can see that DS3 is arriving to stay with friends / family with a bunch of wrapped gifts.

AS long as it's checked it should be fine. I flew with a sword back from India with no problem

I think the knives will be fine, but they may arrive unwrapped if TSA thinks they look "suspicious" when they go through the x-ray. You may want to unwrap them before you go.

Thanks for the suggestion ... I think I prefer to leave them wrapped but if they get unwrapped that would be fine!
I just hope they are not confiscated but above all I hope my DS3 doesn't end up on the nightly news!

He'll be fine.
We brought a set of Henkel knives to MIL one Christmas while we lived in Germany. I think it was 2010.

I would ship the knives separately, they still scan the bags at the airport and fedex ground is cheap.

Too late for that Captain. Thinking about it I wish I'd ordered them on Amazon and had them shipped, but it's too late for that now.
ETA: And Fedex Air is NOT cheap.

We brought a set of steak knives in our checked luggage from Toledo, Spain. (Along with illegally undeclared alcohol....whoops!) He'll be fine.

No, they shouldn't be confiscated in checked bags. My bigger worry would be that they'd get stolen.

I have carried knife sets out and other sharp implements back in and the only time I had to open up my bag was in 2001 December. Security was very high, but they were good with it when I showed them that it was wrapped and was a gift.
Just in case, give him the receipt and a letter saying that they are gifts and he should be fine.
I have not had any gifts or items stolen from my bags and I travel 4-5 times a year. I usually check in my work laptop when I travel outside the US, since it is very heavy and I hate carrying stuff. My bags have arrived late a couple of times when I came in to LAX and I had a lot of gifts , but they delivered them the next day and everything was in there.

I've seen people try to carry on knives and overheard TSA telling them they go in checked bags or they do not go.
I brought a crock pot as carry on in summer of 2002. Called TSA and they told be it would get swabbed, etc. It did and it passed. Would not have been bringing it if mom had not been cleaning out her kitchen.

Funny story; In 1988 DH and I were living in the Washington DC area but got married in San Diego. My mother saved the top tier of the wedding cake put it in a freezer back and placed it in a box in which a circular saw had been shipped.
On our journey back to Washington DC, I got a couple of funny looks going through security but only one person asked me if there was really a circular saw blade in the box. I told him our story and he didn't bother to check.
Obviously pre 9/11!

But now I'm getting nervous. I KNOW the knives have to go in checked baggage, as does DS3.
I'm not a parent, but he might be more comfortable in coach.

Good catch! Especially funny since Debt is an English teacher! And I don't want to know how many of these kinds of errors I make!

I brought back 4 large cooking knives from Thailand via UAE (Dubai) in December with no problems. We stayed in Dubai for a few days and I thought there might be an issue with having 4 huge knives in my bag when entering UAE, but no one said a word. Arrival back in the US was fine, we didn't transit so no bag scans but it shouldn't be a problem here either.

DS3 is in Cali now, and he has to clear customs before he gets his domestic flight. I don't think I can stay up much longer (I'm working a long day tomorrow and starting early).
I don't care if the knives are unwrapped, and I truly hope they don't get stolen (DS3 locked his bag). But above all, I don't want him on the nightly news (or Gd forbid in jail)!!!
ETA: Note to self: in retrospect, the knives were a really dumb idea!

He made it! I don't know the details but DS3 got through customs and immigration quickly with no problem. He is now waiting to board his domestic flight. Thank you all! ETA: I'm still going to worry when he travels from Cali to NY with two of the three sets, but much less so than today when he was travelling internationally!!!

My bag ALWAYS gets opened but I pack some weird stuff when I fly. I flatter myself that TSA is interested in what kind of wine I bring home.
