It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

Drat! The copy-catters are coming out of the woodwork. You get one nut who decides it's the right thing to do to blow innocents away and a dozen other idjits have to jump in for their "moment in the sun". Sick!

coming out of the woodwork doesn't even begin to describe this. in a discussion elsewhere online, someone posted this link - linkthe authors drew a line in the sand with Sandy Hook. since Newtown, there have been 74 school shootings. seventy-freaking-four. and people don't see a problem with this?!

I remember the good old days when revenge was only a bloodied nose.

Obviously gun laws are too restrictive or this would not be happening.

Yet again.
Every single gun owner on this board had better have their guns LOCKED UP when not in use and make sure they are not available to their kids (who they would never imagine doing something like this).
They have got to stop giving the shooters any notoriety. No links to their facebook or video manifestos.
The states need to stop limiting a parents ability to intervene in mental health or substance abuse issues. I could know my 15 year old was going off the rails and there isn't a thing I could do about it to force them into treatment or involuntarily hospitalization here.

IMHO, we need to figure out a new way to handle mental illness. I don't agree with "locking up" everyone who suffers with it, but OTOH when we know someone who's exhibiting threatening behavior, we can no longer wait until they attack someone.
Ideas?

Questions ........ how many of the shooters are on drugs? How many started with pot? If they grew up on Ritalin and that type, what are the circumstances of the original drug?
All of these are making me ill also. The pain inflicted that shouldn't be.
The biggest question ........... WHY

It looks like it could have been much worse.
Padgett came to school was a daunting array of weaponry in a guitar case and a duffel bag. Anderson said he fired an AR-15 rifle, but also had a semi-automatic handgun, a knife, and nine loaded magazines capable of holding "several hundred rounds."
Padgett got the guns, ammunition and knife from his home. Anderson said the weapons were all secured, but Padgett found a way around the security. Anderson did not detail how.

A closer look: How many Newtown-like school shootings since Sandy Hook?(CNN) -- After Tuesday's shooting at an Oregon high school, many media outlets, including CNN, reported that there have been 74 school shootings in the past 18 months. That's the time period since the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were shot to death. The statistic came from a group called Everytown for Gun Safety, an umbrella group started by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a passionate and public advocate of gun control. Without a doubt, that number is startling. So on Wednesday, CNN took a closer look at the list, delving into the circumstances of each incident Everytown included.
CNN determined that 15 of the incidents Everytown included were situations similar to the violence in Newtown or Oregon -- a minor or adult actively shooting inside or near a school. That works out to about one such shooting every five weeks, a startling figure in its own right. Some of the other incidents on Everytown's list included personal arguments, accidents and alleged gang activities and drug deals. www.cnn.com/2014/06/11/us/school-shootings-cnn-number/index.html?iid=article_sidebar

I notice you don't have any commentary of your own, would you mind offering up your opinion? quite frankly, even one shooting is too many.

A gun ìn a school to seek revenge against another is still a gun in a school where additional harm to others ìs always a real possibility.
