and 2 more injured by a shooter who is still on the loose this morning. Moncton, NB is on lockdown. all of this is going on a few streets away from the family of one cousin of mine. Please keep Moncton in your thoughts today, as well as the families of the RCMPs lost last night. thank you. Manhunt in Monctonmore coverage

How horrible.
Are any of our Canadian members near there? My knowledge of Canadian geography is pretty non-existent.

no, the police are heavily armed as they look for this nutcase. I saw something this am on the news here in MA, the guy's FB page was all about guns and "going out with a bang".

So sorry to hear that!!! I know in the UK police are not armed, is it the same in Canada? I was wondering that too. And how many people try to cross the border with a weapon? I understand Europe thinks we're nuts for the sheer number of guns in this country but does our number of guns = Canadian law enforcement needing more guns?

I don't think any of our members are in NB, Beth. I know there's a couple on Icey's board from the Friday night trivia. thanks for asking that, I'll be heading over there to check next.

Our police are armed. I have family in that area. I can't find any articles about what instigated the whole thing.

I just read about this, chiver78. Sounds like a nut case. I hope they catch him soon, before he hurts, or kills someone else.

My condolences to the officers' families, and the citizens of New Brunswick and Canada. Get the SOB who injured and killed the officers.

Yes, the Royal Cdn Mounted Police are like any other police force - except unlike individual city forces, they're National.
They also have specialized SWAT Teams and equipment, as do civic police forces.
They (RCMP) are in charge of policing the smaller cities/towns that don't have an established local City police force.
Moncton NB is a City of approx 100,000 and falls under the RCMP's jurisdiction.

This is beyond my comprehension.

I live about 20 minutes outside the city but my husband grew up on the street this guy started his rampage from.
I work downtown in the city and I went into work this morning, but went home at lunch time. The entire city has pretty much ground to a halt. I've never seen the streets so empty. I'm "working" from home, but with all the Facebook, Twitter feeds, muliple news channels I'm listening to I'm afraid I'm not having a very productive day.
We are so fortunate here that things like this only happen rarely. Not that there are no murders in our town, but generally they aren't so random. Also last night someone got shot by the sleazy strip club which is not really engendering as much terror as this other guy.
I just think of all the people all over the world where killing happens so often they dont' even blink, let alone shut a city down.

Appreciate the updates! I can't find anything as to why this whackadoodle did this - they usually publish some kind of manifesto...

I knew last night when they shut down the ability to hear the police scanners online that they were probably moving in. It was pretty anticlimactic though. We expected someone who killed police randomly and had said they "wanted to go out with a bang" would have preferred that scenario over a prison term. But I guess it is easier said than done when you have had 24 hours on the run in the woods in the cold pouring rain.
It was frustrating waiting for the major news outlets to verify. I was pretty certain just by the tone of voice of the police over the scanners (relieved and happy) that the person they were transporting was the guy, but it was probably an hour before there was anything in the press.
I'm not normally a weirdo that listens to police scanners but it was kind of addicting.

the scanners all went quiet before the swat team went into the rooming house yesterday afternoon too. I was so happy to wake up this morning to news that he'd been caught.
it may have been anticlimactic, but at least nobody else got hurt. it will be interesting to find out what the hell made him decide this was a good idea.

I'm so glad to hear they've got this guy in custody. Residents of Moncton can again feel safe to go about their lives. My condolences to the families and friends of those officers slain.

5 RCMP officers being in the vicinity of this guy to get shot would be like having 5 FBI agents getting shot by one guy. Something was going on. It is unusual for 5 RCMP to gather in one place for something. This isn't like the city police being called out to some kind of domestic disturbance. I want to know what this guy was up to before the shootings to have so many RCMP there.

The original 911 call was about a man out on the street with guns. Dispatch would have sent at least 2 cars to respond and probably more for backup.
They tend to take gun calls very seriously.

They used to do that here too- now it is "there's a man with a rifle walking around Target, a public park, etc."
911 response "Call us back if he shoots anyone"
