I am not just selling Amish chickens. There some other farm organic and wonderful I am dealing with...
Opening my email today and reading:
It's the First Chicken Butchering of 2014!
Our boys, W-17, W-13, and R-11 crawled out of bed at 4:00 Monday morning to catch the first flock for butchering.
So yes, the long awaited GMO-free, soy-free, antibiotic-free chickens, fresh from The xxx organic pastures are here!
-------------------
Does anyone else thinking of 3 boys bloody murdering chickens?

Perhaps it does focus too much on the butchering. But one has to know that's how it's done.
It was open farm day at the CSA Saturday and all I could think about, while they were showing off the baby animals, were the awesome smells coming from the smokers, lol...
It's ok to ignore the literal 'blood in the gutter' I guess... But it I'd part of the process.

The chickens aren't going to kill and clean themselves. Every piece of meat in every grocery store in the country had to be bloodily murdered by somebody. I'm just glad I don't have to do it myself.

Butchering is really the right term. It's not as if they said they were going to "murder" the chickens, "kill" them, "chop their heads off", etc.
I suppose it could have said they woke up early to start the chicken rapture as hundreds were sent up to chicken heaven.

I am pretty ok with that - however telling about 3 boys woke up can't wait to get their hands bloody was yuck! I am glad the father had no desire to describe the whole process so we know...just how fun it is

Chicken rapture. Perhaps it would have been more sensitive to imply that they only sold chickens that committed suicide in the wild. Seriously, Amish kids don't have video games, so they have to make do with what they have.

We live in the area of Tyson Foods. Daily we see the huge trucks hauling chickens and turkeys in their cages to the processing plants.
I still like chicken the best.

Chicken rapture. Hey, really tasty chicken can produce rapture, especially when it is deep-fried and eaten while sitting in a hole-in-the-wall joint in a small Southern town. Oh, wait...you meant a different kind of chicken rapture. My bad

It says the boys went out to round up the chickens, not that the boys will be doing the actual butchering.
Although my grandfather did have to kill chickens when he was a child. He turned out alright.

He turned out alright. If they are Amish boys I bet they did the butchering. They tend to not baby their kids as much as the rest of us do

There are issues though. Looney is better off putting Fresh Chicken! On her sign that Freshly Butchered Chicken! Most people don't want to be reminded of where meat comes from.
The CSA used to hem and haw a bit if I suggested picking my share up on a day when they are butchering, until they realized it doesn't bother me. Most of their clients are city dwellers who pick up at common locations and only come to the farm on open days when things are 'cleaned up' and there are cute animals everywhere.

Have you ever seen guys having to catch chickens for butchering? The first couple are easy to grab. Then the chickens catch on. My memory of my dad and uncles doing it one year in a muddy chicken pen still makes me cry laughing. Those of us that know the routine find this email priceless

I was thinking that little kids might find it fun to chase and catch chickens.

Chasing and trying to catch chickens is fun for kids on a farm that has chickens. They're basically stupid birds, but if one starts running around, they all do - so it becomes a game trying to catch them.
I wouldn't (personally) get a young child involved in the slaughtering or butchering of them, though I do have memories of my dad going out to hunt ducks, geese & pheasants, and bringing the dead birds home to be cleaned & gutted.
The age of the boys in the OP (if accurate) seems an age old enough to understand that they're marketing a food source. I wouldn't recommend the activity for a child younger than 10.
But if you're raised on a farm from birth, it's also a way of life and normal.
