That's why I asked. I can understand why the people working at McDonalds are pissed- if the cost of living is that high. Minimum wage has no place in a city like that- maybe why Seattle went for $15/hr minimum.

Seattle is phasing it in over a few years. It is not an immediate $15ph and small business takes a little longer to kick in.

It's a union state and its a teacher with a lot of years. It isn't about the subject taught.

If you are "pissed" because you work at McDonald's and someone with a college degree makes more than you do, then perhaps you should get off your arse and go to college or acquire a skill or degree that someone will pay for. Funny how it is someone ELSE'S fault if they acquire more skill and education and make more money.

But, what point are you trying to make? Is this a discussion of teacher salaries or a discussion of the rape incident?

I am trying to figure out what this has to do with a "double standard"?

If teaching is such a lucrative job, then go to school and become a teacher. I am always amazed at the incessant whining over teacher salaries. What they make is not unreasonable for their level of education. If you dont' want college educated people teaching your kids, then let's just warehouse our kids in the auditorium all day and have some illegals babysit them for below minimum wage.

80K though? she isn't tenured or on disability yet? cause that's low. meanwhile she got pissed when her victim asked another girl to the prom. she prolly would have stabbed them if she wasn't nabbed first.

Our teachers start in at the low $30'sK. I hardly think that is some ridiculous salary for a person with a BS Degree and one who is expected to obtain permanent certification credits post graduate as well. People want to focus on the teachers at the top. Why shouldn't a teacher with years of experience make a good salary? Nobody seems to be squawking at the explosion of highly paid administrators. Schools used to have a principal and superintendent. Now, many schools have multiple principals, assistant principals, superintendents, assistant supers, along with a plethora of highly paid business managers, managers, tech people, etc.

I think the 80k was an afterthought. I thought the double standard was going to be if the female teacher got a lighter sentence than a male teacher sleeping with a student...

Ok. That is fair. I do think female teachers tend to get more of a pass.

But they found me out, I live in my mom's basement and work at McDonalds and am highly jealous of anyone making a salary they can actually live on Don't own any guns either.

Your quote not mine. And from that you jump to the conclusion that 'I am pissed' and am ranting over teacher's salaries or that I should go to college or some shit?

I have degrees (that's plural), working in a job where I am not using them, and make more than a lot of those that are so
I do just fine- I am sure I am not doing as well as some people around here- but in my part time job I average $100+/hr easy. Not uncommon to make $400-500 cash before lunch. Think I would work for McDonald's? The only food jobs I ever had- when I was in school- was cooking and delivery at pizza shops- paid better than minimum too.
Still I think minimum wage needs to be much higher, in fact the majority of people should be making a little more, and the minority on the top need to be paying a little more.

Some random thoughts (based only on the comments since I didn't read the article) 1. Mcdonald's fries are the bomb-diggety. YUM. 2. In high school gym class, I once got mad at someone and broke a badminton racquet over their head. 3. Not only have I never had a house with a basement, I've never even been in a house that had a basement. 4. I have two bachelor's degrees and a doctorate, and volunteer full-time for a cat rescue.

Everyone has to start at the bottom of the totem-pole and strive to work their way up.
I don't think minimum wage is the problem - a fry cook or counter person at McD's is doing a low scale job that doesn't require a degree or much skill - or even high-school diploma, and only minimal training. If they work their way up to Asst. Manager and then Manager though hard work and being reliable employees, then good for them.
If you want to earn the high $$, then get the degrees PLUS experience to work your way up the ladder in the same way. You can't expect to start off a career making what other seasoned employees are making.
$15/hr Min Wage doesn't sound unreasonable - for a basic unskilled job such as McDs or a convenience store clerk.

Soooo a teacher making 80K then has WHAT do with minimum wage and McDonalds? If you actually read what I wrote- I said I understand why McDonalds min. wage employees IN NEW YORK are so pissed if the cost of living is high enough where a gym teacher makes 80K. How in hell would it even be possible for someone there to live on minimum wage when they can't even do it in LCOL areas?
They sure as heck aren't making close to 80 around here- which is why I was surprised- plus I was unaware a gym teacher had to have the same education level as a regular teacher. Excuuuuuuse meeeee.

Really? You thought I taught in a public school to special needs children with a high school diploma? Bullshit. I got paid based on my seniority, not that I got paid for shit but I CHOSE to love where I lived vs, making a lot of money by living where teachers make a lot of money. No, I don't think McDonalds or unskilled labor should make $15 an hour but that is between them and their employers. You need to work two jobs because you're unskilled? So be it. I was skilled and worked three. I wasn't too precious to work to support myself and my kids. Some people think they're owed something just by being out on this earth. Very sad that the govt has fostered this mentality by supporting those who make poor decisions.

If McDonalds WANTS to set their starting wage at $15 an hour, they may do so.

But, go ahead. Raise it to $50 an hour. The only thing that will accomplish is that the economy will simply shift and adjust and minimum wage workers will be no better off than they are right now.
