WI Union Demonstrators: How do I convey I don't support them?
So I am coming home from work today and I encounter Union demonstrators demonstrating in favor of collective bargaining-against Governor Walker (In no less than 3 places). I am a non-union worker/taxpayer. So supporters honk their horns...how do I tell them to go to hell as I drive past?

It is winter in Wisconsin, and the demonstrators were on two freeway overpasses. The third set of demonstrators were there when I was getting on the freeway.
They were shouting...I don't know if they would have heard me.

OK...so a cheesehead carrying around a foam finger around in her car.
Good thing DH is not a union supporter. Who knows where you might find my finger otherwise.

Very carefully. They are very angry. Almost everyone I know has spouses, friends, neighbors whom we love that are government employees. They take this personally. There is not much you can do publicy without causing harm to those relationships. A quiet moment at the voting booth used to work.

xmascookie.
I agree DH's brother is pretty high up in a local Union. I am afraid if I express my opinion truthfully even his brother might take action against us.

Not publicly, but privately I have been reading the riot act to my siblings that are gov't employees - and yes you are right they take this fight personally - I just keep trying to get them to see the tax payer side - uphill fight

I flipped off a gang of people protesting Israel outside a mosque here when they shook their signs at me. They came toward my cab, light changed, and I punched it out of there. Do be careful you are not stuck where you are, or they might beat you up.

curious turn of a phrase .. I've concluded that the most frequently used word by right wing talk show ding dongs (Hannity, Limbaugh, Levin) is the word 'they / them" .. always in the undefined sense ... but then they are paranoid, crackpot righties

Uhm, don't honk your horn? I think flipping the bird is bad all the way around. Not necessary and could incite the crowd.
I'm mixed about unions. I think they were needed and still have a place, but they have also fallen to corruption and greed. Many have not come to realize their days of holding employers hostage are ending, and they need to adapt to changing times and be realistic in their expectations and demands.
That being said, they are going to take this personally. It is their livelihood and way of life that is being threatened. In some cases, you may be dealing with people who are second, third, or even greater generations of union members.

I like to sometimes put peoples' speeches or transcripts into wordle.net. They will make a visual of the most frequently used words, with the most frequent being the biggest...
Now, generally, the 'common' words are left out, so if you want to see if they/them come up, then you'd have to go under Language, and change that setting... its fun to play around with... i love that site...

They( yes, I'm using that word) know that we don't want to fight with our families, friends and neighbors . Just privately you need to contact the people we have elected to work for us. They need to know when you support them and when you don't.

I agree with you on most of this What don't you agree with - curious? You got me here - I actually agree with you - I think the most of this came from your word mixed- but I do not disagree with anything in your post. My post should have been a bit more positive

I think unions have done a great deal to help the American laborer, but they became too powerful and corrupt. I think they still have a place in this country, but some need to get off their high horses and realize they are, in some cases, doing more harm than good. There is an arrogance about some unions, and/or their leadership, that is no longer realistic or acceptable.

Why do you need to "flip someone off" ? That says more about the person doing the "flipping' than anything else. This is America. People can assemble and protest whether you agree with it or not. If you disagree witht protestors, form your own protest group and go out and march. Or, if the protestors are putting forth legislation you disagree with, then you call, write, petition your legislators regarding that or offer up your own petitions for legislation you support. Flipping someone off is extremely childish, rude and makes you look like an idiot. Geesh, Snerdley, I'm in agreement with you on this.
