It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

Oh, dear. I'd not heard she'd passed. I've so enjoyed her writings over the years. A lovely woman who contributed a great deal to our world. RIP, gentle soul.

apparently, it was overnight or early this morning that she passed. my FB news feed has pretty much blown up with her quotes.
she was an amazing soul, and will absolutely be missed.

I guess it was too much to hope that they'd learn from the example set at Fred Phelps' funeral. may the mourners drown out their hate.

Westboro Church continues to look like fools they are. If there is an afterlife, Maya is laughing her ass off right now knowing what will be in store for the church members after they pass from this world into the next.

Not trying to be insensitive, but I never heard of her before her death announcement. I was surprised she was supposed to go to Fayetteville, Ar. which she cancelled just before her death. That's not that far from where I live. (150 miles ?)

I first heard of Maya Angelou around 1970 after her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, was first published in 1969. Angelou was in the national news in 1993 when she recited one of her poems during President Clinton's inauguration.
Among her many other awards and honorary doctoral degrees she received during her lifetime, she was awarded the National Medal of arts in 2000 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
