Maybe if homeowners would stop shooting people, there would be officers to deal with thefts. Well, yeah...when it takes the whole police force to haul in one guy, one can only imagine how many other people are getting ripped off during that time. One armed and presumably agitated man who had already killed someone. And, yeah, imagine how many crimes the police could have been investigating on limited resources had he found a saner way to respond instead of shooting a person to death over a piece of property.

And what would you have done if you'd been getting repeatedly ripped off and no law enforcement would help you? I suppose you'd just let the creeps keep coming onto your property and taking what they wanted? Good for you. Very generous.

A garage or fence with better locks. Devices on the car to prevent it from being taken/started. Consider moving to an area where life was more pleasant. Alarm system. Warning shots. Not actually killing a man. My solution tends to be cars that no one wants to steal. But, hey, the guy decided that it was worth ruining his own life over forver, and that's his call. It wouldn't be my call, not for a piece of depreciating metal. But I'm sure his life is infinitely better now, so I'm happy for him.

When you're having to place yourself, your family and all of your possessions behind locks, alarms, cameras and fences, in order to be safe, you're already in a prison. When and where do you draw the line?

I still don't get it. How do you know they are a hoarder? I have an unhealthy obsession with that show.

Nothing you really can do. Her home wasn't condemned because she is a hoarder. She still has the stuff so it was probably old and in disrepair. What is sad is her son enabling her like that.

Coming back to address the question of how I know that they are a hoarder. Maybe "know" is too strong a term, but this person is moving in unopened canned goods that are so old, they have visible rust on them. Virtually everything is dirty and there are multiple copies of there dirty/broken items that they are moving into the house.

Sounds like she had to move out "in a hurry" and couldn't part with these items.
You said the City "condemned" her last house. Was it condemned for a public project or was it condemned because of ill repair?

She has been moving in for over a month, so nothing hurried. I do not know the cause for the previous house to be condemned. I spoke to her son though, who is helping her move, and he said the previous house was just too old and that caused it to get condemned. I am just basing this thread on the content that we see being moved into the house across the street. How many broken storage boxes for cassette tapes does one person really need after all?

That's why I put "in a hurry" in quotes. She's obviously got an issue with letting stuff go. She's not going to be fixed but as a neighbor you can be diligent about issues that would bring down your neighborhood such as non operating vehicles, weeds, et cetera.
Sorry this is happening. The process dealing with this is slow. And as heartless as this sounds, keep in mind the woman will not live forever so it WILL end.

Traveling South into Reno, on the right hand side of 395, one can look down the slope at a small mobile, in fact it appears there are a number of little mobiles and camp trailers, all setting in the middle of acres of trash. This mess is clearly visible to county officials passing by. So, why hasn't anything been done about it? Because no wheel wants to squeak? Yes, because no one wants to squeak. And, maybe, because any vermin problems might only an issue for the resident because there are no nearby neighbors? Public officials usually don't go looking for problems. They often respond to complaints.
