Either manufacturers are overreacting or they are all producing substandard products on an ongoing basis. For example. GM has recalled almost 14 MILLION cars so far (including 218,000 Chevrolet Aveo subcompact cars announced today).
Here's how ridiculous things can get:
JPMorgan’s Ryan Brinkman and team worry that the spate of recalls–some of which verge on the ridiculous–could be changing the perception of General Motors from a company concerned with safety to one that has more than its fair share of problems compared to its competitors:
While our inclination is to believe this may help shape the narrative of a firm doggedly committed to safety, we wonder if the pendulum may now be beginning to swing too far in the other direction, implying some safety concerns that are rooted in only trivial issues. As one example, GM recently recalled 19,225 Cadillac CTS sedans with the explanation that if the vehicle receives a jump start, and if when receiving a jump start the wiper blades are engaged, and if when receiving a jump start while the wipers are engaged, those wipers are also obstructed (such as by ice and snow), then the wipers may become inoperable. If a driver nonetheless elected to still drive when the windshield was obstructed by ice and snow, when visibility conditions could be impaired, increasing the chance of an accident. GM knows (obviously) of no crashes or injuries related to the condition.

Just like any lawsuit some things tend to get ridiculous and others are warranted. I know a couple of auto generations ago it was well known of a flaw and the company chose to let it go to production. They figured the change cost would be larger than any lawsuits filed so they let the $$$$$ rule.
I have forgotten the company, year, etc but when this information came out you-know-what hit the fan.
I think the lesson was learned so they are re-acting to anything and everything.
How much nicer it would be if Research and Development had more time for testing and identifying. But that costs money and the autos would last a lot longer.

The Pinto.
One reason is cars are 100X more complex than they were- the other is some are dumb recalls over dumb rules.
I have recalls from GM right now for express vans- where it doesn't meet the standards for interior impact if the occupant is not belted in at below air bag deployment speeds! So put on the damn seatbelt- that's what it is there for- and maybe you won't bust your head on the instrument panel. Sheesh. Do we have to protect the stupid from themselves? Remember folks, don't dry you hair in the tub......

We're dealing with a recall notice right now. Unfortunately, none of the dealers have the replacement part (yet). Sooo, how many more lawsuits will we see because the replacement part wasn't produced in a timely manner?

I have a recall notice from a long time ago for my car. It was something trivial but I should probably get it fixed.

Yes they are getting out of hand. Every dumbass who ran into a wall is blaming it on the cars. But that's how Amurikans roll. Always looking for the free money.
