Who knew you save some money at a place like that, but we did.
We needed to license a new to us car. We went to a small town about 1 hour from us to avoid the 4 hrs. wait time for the office closer to us. We inquired about getting a military plate for DHs car, as the cost for the plate would have been $3.75 instead of $37. In presenting the lady with DHs DD214 to prove military service in Viet Nam, she asked if he was disabled, and I said yes.
Well, it seems that Ark. has changed some of its regulations: At 80% disabled and a lifetime member of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) he qualified for the Disabled Veteran plate. Cost to us? $1. It has no stickers on it and does not need to be renewed each year. You can have 2 vehicles registered this way, so our main driving car will be next.
I figure the savings will be about $120/yr. but you can't put a price on not having to relicense each vehicle every year. These plates also allow for handicap parking which will be a blessing when we need it for DH.

I've learned to ask a lot of questions in my old age and am surprised what is out there if only you ask!! Good for you for thinking to ask that question.

Not only do some states do things like that with vehicle licensing....in some Vets can get free fishing licenses and most state & National Park systems have programs too. You just have to ask. Another thing to think about is the military rental units if you are traveling. Some places allow Vets if they aren't full of active duty and some don't. But some of those charge around $40-$50 a night when "out on town" will cost over $100 a night. And be sure to ask at regular hotels/motels....some have better discounts for Vets than AARP or other discounts.
If you ask, the worst thing they can say is no!

Arkansas doesn't give vets much to begin with, and since DH is "only" 80% disabled, This was a complete surprise and a very nice one at that.

I always ask places about senior discounts.
You will save a lot of $ over the years since you will not have to renew the license plates.

We finally got the paperwork from the dealer on an SUV we bought for me 2 months ago. The state allows that DAV plate to be on 2 cars, so I will get the one for it today. Free plate, no expiration....how much better can it be?
