A personal favorite, czarnina(chinina) Duck blood soup! Great Polish food Omg, I haven't seen that in years! My area has a lot of polish descendents. My mom was engaged to a man whose mom was off the boat polish. She made this soup often. I wouldn't try it. But I love me some haluski, pierogies and kielbasa!

Tastykakes are made in Philly, but are finally being enjoyed outside the regions. :-) I used to drive past the old factory at my old job; oh man the smell of the cherry pies baking in the morning was awesome! Butterscotch krimpets and peanut butter kandy kakes rule! Sorry, but those things are nasty. (And I say that as someone who still mourns the demise of Hostess Zingers- I love me some junk food on rare occasions.) A Phila.-based client sent our department a box of goodies from there last Christmas and the Tastykakes were barely touched. I finally threw them out in March when, despite the preservatives, they started to develop mold. And here's what I miss from my roots, despite living in an area famous for its BBQ. Fortunately a powdered mix which is a decent imitation is available. Say what? Tastykakes are freaking awesome!

I want haluski and real pierogies! I had to look up haluski. I've had it, but I think my mom just called them kluski (noodles). I think they're just eh. Love pierogi though, especially blueberry filled ones. (Sweet tooth here). Love nalesniki too.

I miss real bagels- boiled, not steamed, before baking. Here they sell hard rolls with a hole in the middle and call them bagels. When we go to Ohio to visit MIL, I have to have my Skyline Chili! The company does sell it frozen; it's not bad. And unless the establishment actually makes their own bagels, it's just not worth eating them. We have four places in the neighborhood that do make their own bagels. You need that boil-and-bake method, or the crust just isn't right.

Speaking of bagels. Montreal bagels are actually better than NY city ones! We have a place here that makes what I would call a Montreal-style bagel. Not bad....less dough, slightly sweeter crust. It's a good sandwich bagel, because it is less dense. But for slathering on a carton of cream cheese, nothing beats a NY bagel.

Those are all the reasons I prefer the Montreal bagel. I don't LOVE bagels, but I do like the Montreal bagel. I also do like them sweeter, but obviously it's a personal taste thing.
I also prefer their smaller size. A normal NY bagel is like enough to feed a small family. I really love pâté on mine though, not cream cheese.
Try authentic ones in Montreal and then tell me if you still think the NY ones are better.
