Both MidJD and DramaQ have both mentioned their husbands feel the need to have meat with every meal.
Yesterday, I had the same experience. There was a "luncheon" at work in which the only option was a salad bar. Honestly, it just didn't feel right eating just a salad for lunch. I felt like I would be hungry again in a few hours without more "substanance." So I went and got a grilled turkey wrap for lunch.
Like many Americans, I was raised on the "steak and potato" type diets. Dinners are tradiationally a meat with two different vegitables and/or fruit. It's hard to break that concept.
Anyway, what about you and your family? Does just having a salad, or just having one food group in general seem "right" to you?

I can do a salad (with an alternate protein, such as hard-cooked eggs, cheese or chick peas) without an issue. In fact, I do it for dinner regularly
DH is a typical midwestern boy; he needs meat or chicken or fish with lunch and dinner.

DH and I are down to one large meal with meat per day. The second smaller meal of the day may or may not contain meat, but usually a small amount as in soup or a small sandwich. When our sons were home I did serve meat at the evening meal every day. Breakfast was often bagels, cereal, eggs, toast, more carbs. Our sons ate the school lunch, so they were starving for protein by the time they got home.
Both our sons are now one big meal per day eaters. They deliver for a sandwich chain and can often grab a lettuce wrap or sandwich for free.

I need protein at every meal. It doesn't have to be meat, though.

I can do a salad for dinner just fine. I've made a lunch out of fresh cucumbers from the farmer's market and some garden herb aioli I got at a food truck and was quite happy.
DH has the attitude that he would wither away and die if he ate like that. BUT his cholesterol numbers came back very high after his last physical. It's either he needs to change his diet or go on medication.
So he's come around to eating salads for lunch. Now that he's had to face reality he's decided having to have giant slabs of meat at every meal isn't worth having a heart attack over.

I do prefer some type of meat at every meal. Unless I am having something like a peanut butter sandwich for lunch, then it's not necessary. But I do prefer chicken/steak on my salad and to have some sort of meat/starch/veggie combo for dinner.

Meat with bread, meat with salad, meat with potatoes (yumm), meat with...everything...yeah, I guess I can't stay away from it.

Yep, cheese has protein, as do most, if not all dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs, etc.). You should check out My Fitness Pal too - it's amazing to see what is actually in the food you are eating (the amount of sodium, carbs, protein, etc.).

Well, when I say I like having meat with every meal, I don't mean giant slabs of meat. I agree having a 16 oz. steak every meal would be a bit much. I like having meat though, even if it's just on a turkey sanwhich. In fact, most of my lunches usually consist of a sandwhich or wrap and a small bag of chips.

Given we spent 4 years as vegetarians we aren't as picky about having meat with every meal now. I typically only have meat in my evening meal. I do frequently have two scrambled egg whites for breakfast (with veggies mixed in) but at lunch I typically only have veggies or a salad.
Most week nights we do have a regular protein with dinner but we try to only have red meat twice a week. The other nights we'll eat fish, chicken or pork. We made taco salads last night for dinner and one night later this week we'll have steak.

Hmmm, if I had to give an honest accounting of my diet, I probably eat too many carbs/starches and too much dairy, and not enough fruits and vegtibles. In my defense though, I live alone and it's hard to eat fresh fruits and veggies before they spoil. I get bannanas or salad and it goes bad in a few days.
In my defense though, I don't eat massive lunches and don't eat breakfast at all. I'm not a morning person and can't be bothered to cook that early.

I don't eat a lot of fruit but I do eat a lot of veggies. I guess that evens things out?

Well, when I say I like having meat with every meal, I don't mean giant slabs of meat.\ It's definitely all about proportions and what you're eating. DH is used to very fatty/gristly hunks of meat because his mother bought whatever was cheapest and you needed to "clean your plate" which means not only do you eat all the meat, you eat the nasty bits too. He also has a tendency to eat a lot of processed heavily fatty meats like fast food breakfast sandwiches. That's not good for you either. So that's been DH's normal until I came along and refused to eat like that. I took over all the cooking in the house and simply didn't bring that crap in. It has been a real fight to get him to eat meatless meals. He's come around over time, especially to meals where I replace meat with beans, that doesn't feel like eating "rabbit food" to him. I was surprised he took it upon himself to start eating salads for lunch. Guess the numbers really put the fear of God into him.

I usually don't eat meat. Most dinners (I'd say 5 a week) are meat free.
I don't need 'meat' - I need protein. A salad can have lots. Cheese, eggs, beans, etc can all fill that need. I looooove salad bars.
Last night was veggie kabobs with tofu on the grill. Night before was eggplant and pasta with broccoli. Meat is expensive and not that good for you in large quantities.

I can do a grilled cheese or peanut butter sandwich. I'll also do veggie or black bean soup. I'm allergic to both egg whites and soy so that knocks out two alternate protein sources. If I'm actually cooking then usually there is some sort of meat involved although we aren't eating huge slabs nightly.

I don't need meat, but I DO need some sort of protein with meals. Even if it's cheese, egg or beans, it helps create the illusion of 'fullness' where I'm not gnawing on my arm 2 hours later.

I don't feel like I've eaten if meat wasn't included in what I ate. I guess that's why I don't snack a lot. Eating fruits, veggies and cereal by themselves seems more like just something to do, than eating to stave off hunger. I can eat 2 bowls of cereal and feel like I'm starving 30 minutes later.
I'll eat a salad even though it's not my favorite. I have to "fix it" though. By the time I get done adding a lot of meat and cheese and drowning it in dressing, it's not such a healthy choice anymore.

I can easily add protein to a salad by adding eggs, cheese, shrimp, or chicken. I don't need meat with every meal, just protein in some form. I'm not that fond of meat, anyway.

When I think of meat, I guess I think of red meat and pork. I don't think of seafood and fowl in the same way. Probably just my own interpretation.

I like ONE meal with protein, beef or chicken or eggs. The other meals of the day, I don't care.

Interesting. So I'm not alone in feeling like salad alone is "rabbit food" and you'll be hungry again in a couple of hours. Though you can substitute in other protien to give the impression of fullness.

I can get by without meat, although I eat it often. Never have meat with breakfast, I usually eat cereal, and if I do go out, I don't get bacon or sausage. Lunch often includes some kind of meat, and dinner does about half the time. As others have said, I need protein with every meal (and snack), but usually I get it in liquid form via protein powders.
Still taking in too many carbs, but trying hard to cut back.

First off DH and I usually eat more for lunch than we do dinner, so having a filling lunch is pretty important.
Salad bar can mean a lot of different things. If you just have lettuce and light dressing, you are probably not going to be full for very long. But if you add meat (I have seen a lot with bacon, ham, other small meats) and eggs and have a substantial dressing, it will last a lot longer.
We rarely have a meal with a large serving of meat. For dinner we will fix meals with a chicken breast divided between two with a lot of sides, we sometimes have spagetti with a small amount of meat in the sauce, or egg dishes for dinner.

We don't eat meat every meal but we do have protein.
Breakfast is: banana, shredded wheat, grapefruit for DH, sliced strawberries for me, goat milk for DH, cows milk for me.
Lunch: chicken salad wraps with fresh fruit or unsalted nuts with fresh fruits. Or celery sticks with almond butter.
Dinner: meat, fresh/frozen veggies, fresh fruit.
We have beef at the most twice a week, the rest of the time it's salmon, pork, chicken (mostly chicken).
