Since no one has mentioned this one - don't lean against the car door or you might fall out. I used to think that was the most ridiculous statement ever and leaned on doors. Then I got internet and found a message board to hang out on. One of the women there posted a story about how her son had been disabled because he - fell out the door of a car! Damn, my mother was right. That does sometimes happen.

Best universal dad advice: walk it off.
Although it's not really safety advice. More like "post getting drilled in the nuts with a fastball" advice.

Another kid in DS's den told me that their sliding door on their minivan just opened up while they were driving one day.

Do not do anything that can hurt yourself, another, or cause damage to anyone's property.
Edit: If you are cooking something, turn off the burner and remove the skillet from the burner before leaving the room. Don't leave cooking food unattended.
Don't store canned food in the can it came out of.
Don't eat home canned foods that are given to you.

I fell out of my mom's car in the Hy-Vee parking lot when I was five. Yep I was leaning against/playing with the car door. She didn't notice because I didn't make a sound. She looked into her rear view mirror to see me running behind the car! I give her crap about not noticing her kid disappeared to this day.

I got a LOT of the "traditional" stuff here as a smaller child. When I got to be a college student, she used to tell me: "Be good, but if you can't be good at least be careful."

Safety advice: Don't eat yellow snow..
While not safety related their motto was "If you want to play, you'd best be able to pay."

That does sometimes happen. thankfully my Nana caught me b/c we were on the highway. yes, this does happen.....and now one of my OCD things is to lock the car door before we start moving. ugh.... hmm....I think I got more safety advice from Dad, but here are some highlights: -learn to drive a stick shift, your date might be too drunk to drive you home -get in the habit of unplugging hot appliances (iron, coffee pot, etc) when done using them so you KNOW they are off when you leave the house -don't run the dryer unattended (ours was older than dirt, I'm shocked it never caught fire) oh, and I got the don't walk alone at night/leave a drink unattended things too. but the best safety advice I got was that I could always call them for a ride home. I had to use that card just a couple weeks ago, too - car trouble and I let my AAA lapse.

Safety advice, bah! Her response was always "Ok, just be careful" no matter what I asked to do. That was mostly in my teen years, and other than the basic trying to keep me alive advice (look both ways before crossing the street) I can't recall anything good.

Well, my mom was born in the 30's and believed the only successful woman was a married SAHM, so her advice wasn't all that helpful.
Some of it was "Don't worry about what you major in in college, you won't use your degree anyway, you're just going to college to find a husband." "Don't try to get good grades in school because boys are intimidated by smart girls." "Don't take science and math classes, you'll flunk them because they're hard."
Then there was the puzzling advice, like when she lectured me about the right way to wipe down a kitchen countertop, with the admonition that if I didn't learn how to do it properly, I would end up having wet countertops for the rest of my life. Seriously, if the worst thing I had to deal with was wet countertops, my life would be grand.
Fortunately my dad had better advice, but I'll save that for father's day.

I don't remember my mother ever really giving me advice but I did get to hear about how two of her sisters got scars on their heads. One (her youngest sister) wouldn't move when she was swinging on the swing and she had told her to or get hit, so she got hit with the corner of the swing. The other, (her older sister) stuck her head in the hole my Mama was digging to China and again, didn't move when told so Mama hit her with the shovel. These were along with stories of sitting in the tree where she couldn't be seen and harassing a neighbor lady and her attempt to fly by jumping off the house with an umbrella. I guess I picked up enough of what not to do from those stories and the ones my Daddy would tell me about how idiots got hurt on the job by dong stupid stuff where he worked.

I can't remember any safety advice from mom. Dad used to always get on us if we didn't cross the street fast enough. He was always yelling "Andele! Andele!" at us.

This is mostly life safety advice but it did keep me safe in all aspects. My mom: ALWAYS have your own money and skills and never be reliant on a man for money. Don't get pregnant until you are financially set. Kids trap you and limit your choices and can stick you with an abusive man. My dad: Stop crying or I will give you something to cry about. (After we hurt ourselves or got smacked). I guess when we stopped crying it kept us safe from another smack? And from both of them: Have good credit. Be financially responsible. You want options and choices in life and good credit will bring you that. Work hard at everything you do. Oh, nothing good happens after midnight and only whores stay out that late. Which explains why I'm a night owl.

Don't eat home canned foods that are given to you. As a germophobe, I can see the wisdom of this approach. But as someone who likes tasty food, I gotta say that some of the yummiest jams, sauces and (I know this sounds gross but it wasn't) fish I've ever had were homemade canned foods that someone was kind enough to give me.
If you get any home canned stuff given to you, please send it my way.

POM reminded me of some things. Every time we'd fall down or get hurt, my dad would inspect to see where we fell to see if we damaged the driveway/tile/street/etc. I guess him not paying attention to us got us to stop crying? He swears he checked without us seeing to make sure it wasn't a bad injury, sometimes I believe him. They also gave me financial advice. Always pay off your credit cards. Start saving for retirement as soon as you get a FT job, we wish we had saved more and it gives you the freedom in case something happens.

If you get any home canned stuff given to you, please send it my way. I'm not really a 'germophobe' - it's more related to my 'trust issues' but I too have to say that some of the tastiest jams, pickled veggies, salsas, and sauces have been homemade canned foods that were given to me by my relatives/friends who received them as gifts and passed them on to me - thinking I"d be the one to throw them away. Unfortunately, my curiousity/love of 'science' overcame the "never eat anything home canned" general advie... and I carefully investigated and tried the first 'homemade canned good' that came my way years ago (homemade peach jam) and it was DELISOUS! I will always happily accept a home made canned good - I will carefully inspect it (be a bit suspicious) before eating it but will give it a go. If you want to regift a recently recieved jar o' home made goodness (I'm especially fond of Tomato Jam) you can send it my way if you don't want to send it to Milee! I've finally started home canning small batches of jam, pickled veggies, and sauces and I'm kinda thankful no one else wants to try them... More for ME!!!

Back in the days when you left home when the sun rose and came back before the street lights were on: "Don't get hit by a car, I don't have money for car repairs."
"You can always call for a ride home, no questions asked." Only did that once...and was way above the age to know better!

I'm sorry to disappoint Milee and Tiny. I do not have any home canned goods to forward. I have eaten jams given to me.
The advice was given to me in the 1950s by DM.
Now, I would prefer to have frozen items than home canned.

Mine was don't stick your tongue on a metal object when it's freezing out. Guess who got her tongue stuck and Grandpa had to pour hot water over it to get it unstuck?
Wear clean underwear in case you get into an accident and have to go to the hospital.
Look both ways before crossing the street.

So at work we're doing a safety awareness campaign that's in support of Mother's Day. We're supposed to write down bits of safty knowledge/warnings/advice that our Mom's gave is (presumably as children). I thought Mother's Day projects stopped when you got out of grade school.

I remember my father suggesting that if I got arrested, I ahold wait till morning to call because he wasn't going out in the middle of the night to post bail... I guess that's better than the advice he got from his grandma, 'if you're at the store and don't need anything at least steal toilet paper' (yeah, I know I've told that one before, but it's a good one...)

"Don't worry about what you major in in college, you won't use your degree anyway, you're just going to college to find a husband." LOL! I know an actuary who selected Rensellaer and got an Engineering degree. Her mother didn't brag about that, but about her daughter making the cheerleading squad. When they first got there her mother's eyes lit up when she realized it was mostly male. Potential husbands!

My mom told me to vary my routine. That is, don't take the same route to work each day and don't fall into a nighttime routine that was predictable. Vague as it sounds, vaguely sexy as it sounds, she was talking about safety.
But the most valuable safety advice that she ever gave me involved no words. We were in a third world country after a violent coup and there were three families from three different nations gathered for entertainment and rumor-trading after the dusk curfew. Gunshots rang out, probably from the roadblock nearby. Every adult in the room slid silently off their chair. Nobody said a word, nobody moved toward a window. The children quietly emulated them.
Yeah, I've wondered a lot about how the adults in that room got their training, but it's not bad training. I've found myself doing the slide a few times since then and I've found that it's worth the funny looks. I think more clearly on the floor under such situations and seeing me slide onto the floor seems to stop others from doing anything rash.

Mom had a couple of funny ones. One time, she called me at the dorm to tell me not to eat any lettuce that wasn't well-washed ( now, how would I know that while living in the dorm ) because sometimes the people in the fields would pee on it because they had no sanitary facilities. ( I'm not making this up ). I asked her why she called me long distance to tell me that ? That made her mad. She also cautioned me to pin a $ 10 or $ 20 bill in my brassiere if I was going anywhere, since " you never know when you'll need it. " I didn't do that, either. She also had a thing about having to wear a slip or petticoat all of the time. I was usually pretty obedient, but when I wasn't, I caught hell for that one. She was actually a good mother, just with some very strong viewpoints.
