but I do seem to have some evidence now.
My friend has problems with his back and legs. The doctors say a couple of the vertebrae in his back are compressed or something and the spine is being squeezed and cutting off the nerves that go below his waist. This has resulted in him having to walk without the use of the top muscles of his legs so he is kind of pushing his legs forward. It is hard to describe and creates a weird kind of double limp. Along with this he has almost ongoing back pain. The doctors are scheduling him for surgery to open up the spine.
In the meantime another friend recommended this woman that "straightens out your nerves". I honestly can't get a better answer than that about what she does, even from people that swear by her and swear she has helped them. Anyway, yesterday he drove over 2 hours to have a 15 minute appointment with her that cost him $50. He said she "rubbed his nerves" and it wasn't even as firm as a good massage. Last night he had a lot of pain in his legs and back, more than usual. But today he is walking the best I have seen in over a year. She said it will take two more appointments to get him to his best (most people we know that have gone to her have only need one "treatment") and he is chomping at the bit to go back next Thursday.
If I didn't see the difference with my own eyes I would be skeptical. I was skeptical of the people that told me of their experience, thinking it was wishful thinking on their part. But I know how my friend has been walking every day for the last 10 months, and this has been the best day he has had in all that time. (I didn't see him every day until 10 months ago).
If I would ever say anyone had a healing gift I would say this woman has it.

Some people are more in tune to their own inner power, kinda like a strong mind body connection. Where is she ?

A small town in Northern Ontario. You have to make appts and apparently she is busy 4 days a week most of the year. People travel a few hours on the recommendations of others. I have always kinda believed that Sugi, but this is the first person I know of almost first hand that I am not afraid to say this about. I haven't met her, but I see the evidence of her work.

I'm not sure I understand your post.
I've had ongoing issues with my hands/arms involving tendons/ligaments/muscles/nerves. My most recent physical therapist manipulated all of the above in a way I've never experienced before.
In layman's terms, with the underside of my wrist facing her, she grabbed both sides, slid them up and down and then split them as is they were a Kit Kat bar. Somehow aligning them properly and alleviating the pain.
Nothing mystical when someone knows what they're doing?

There's that as well. Good point Malarky. I think to the time I broke my elbow in two places, my physiotherapist was just amazing.

I'm glad for you Malarky. I guess one of the reasons this woman has impressed me so much is because the chiropractor and doctor my friend sees both said that surgery was the only thing that would help. Don't get me wrong, he hasn't cancelled his surgery. But this has definitely helped.

And I'm thinking more holistic medicine than mystic.

I've never been one to think that only medical doctors know everything there is to know. My grandmother used to swear by her copper bracelets for her arthritis. Although they weren't worth anything, I got them when she passed. I was having issues with my wrist/hand. On a whim, I put on one of those bracelets. Turned my wrist green, but it also made my wrist stop hurting. Perhaps it was the power of suggestion and totally in my head, but as my MD said, as long as I felt better, what difference does it make?

My uncle was a Chiropractor - he manipulated bones and muscles to properly re-align them.
(Many think that Chiropractic medicine is bunk - but it works. He relieved many patients of back, shoulder, leg, wrist pain, etc - and even headaches/migraines.)

GEL, I had Rheumatic Fever just before becoming a teenager - then developed Arthritis. I've used/worn copper bracelets off and on for years - and they've worked for me too.
ETA: one of the bracelets I own is steel plated - the copper is on the ends/tips of the bracelet. No "green" ring around my wrist.

Glad you were helped, SL. I'm not saying they should replace consulting a physician, as there could be underlying problems, but in the absence of a more serious diagnosis, I'd recommend them to anyone with an open mind.

My sister-in-law treats clients in this way. I'm not really sure how it works, but they swear she is helping them.

I have met a "healer" who lays hands on people. He claims he doesn't know how or why, but he can see inside of people's bodies and fix what is wrong. OK, fine by me I don't automatically discount people who may sound like nut jobs. He doesn't preach any religion or claim any god-like qualities.
He does, however, make a living doing this. People buy plane tickets all the time for him to come visit and lay hands on them. He even told me about one client that arranged his services for a pet iguana.
I do believe that some people have more insight than others into the mind/body connection, just as some people have an increased ability and awareness in spiritual matters.
DH is a livid dreamer. We have fun in the mornings trying to decode what his action packed dreams mean that are filled with people from 30 years ago. This week he did dream of someone who had recently passed. Not the first time this has happened. Wouldn't it be great to tap into some of the energy from these dreams/visits.

Jaguar it wasn't in my friend's mind, his faith isn't strong enough for that. truthbound I agree with you about the massage, but by my way of thinking that should not have fixed him the way it has. He has had other massages, chiropractic treatments, seen his doctor and specialists... Like I said, I don't normally put a lot of stock in this kind of thing but I can't deny the results.

Yes it's exactly what I have found as well. There's a lot of stuff and people out there, you just have to weed out the crap and there's a whole lot of crap. The real good stuff is few and far between.
Update the thread Later when you can.

He goes for his second treatment today. I'm trying really hard to manage my expectations here. If he makes the same kind of improvement as he did last week he will be able to start biking again!

Not that it's the same thing, but this reminds me that I wanted to mention that after we'd discussed massage therapy on one of these threads a while back, I decided to try revisiting massage therapy for some back and hip issues. I went to a massage therapist that works through my chiropractor's office, and she made a huge difference in an ongoing problem I've been having. After just the first visit, I noticed a huge reduction in at least one pain issue that no one - traditional doctors, physical therapy, and my chiropractor - had not been able to fix in maybe 2 years. I'll definitely be seeing this girl on a semi-regular basis! I'm so !

I'm certainly not gifted, but both BF and nephew had ongoing back problems. I was able to massage well enough to make them tolerable. Same with my ex-room mates feet (diabetes).
Personally, I don't care how, or why it works, as long as it works.
Does anyone know anything about using magnets for pain?
Good luck to your friend, later. I hope the improvement is significant again!

There is more improvement! He was actually able to do a little jog across the yard! He has not been able to move like that in about 2 years! His legs are far from perfect but this is such a huge improvement. He was getting to the point that he was seriously considering getting a walker and the idea was killing him. He can't get up onto his tiptoes but he can point his toes if he has no weight on the foot. This is so exciting. He is a cyclist and he hasn't been able to do that in about 2 years. He thinks he will soon be back on his bike.
Again, a doctor, a specialist and a chiropractor could not offer any improvement without surgery. This is HUGE!

I am a believe in holistic medicine and a combination of eastern and western medicine. My body felt best when I was getting acupuncture, but it was so expensive and not covered by insurance.

I am a believe in holistic medicine and a combination of eastern and western medicine. My body felt best when I was getting acupuncture, but it was so expensive and not covered by insurance. Both my mom, and my dad's mom, got acupuncture for awhile. They both said it help a lot. My mom bought some of the needles they use, cuz the doctor that did it said he would show someone of her choosing, how and where to do it. She asked m if I'd go with her, so I did. I didn't realize that was the reason! Noooo.... I'm not doing that! Sorry Charlie. I can't help you this time.

Ok, for an update. He aggravated his back and legs again a couple of weeks ago by doing a bunch of landscaping at both his daughter's place and my place. As far as he was concerned if he can't landscape life almost isn't worth living. But he got in for back surgery Tuesday. Again he has a huge improvement and this is right after the surgery. He has surgery pain but he can tell that the back problem is really fixed. He just needs to recover from the surgery properly which means patiently doing no heavy lifting or labour for a couple of months. But if he is patient and does his physio on the schedule dictated he should be good to go for a couple of more decades.
