So I'm trying to work on my withholding for the year, and I've tried the calculator twice, months apart, with similar somewhat strange results. The calculator comes back with the result that we will overpay by $3800 if we maintain our current elections (Married, 0 exemptions and $65 extra on one check, $300 on the other). It then proceeds to suggest that we correct this by changing to Married, 0 exemptions and $115 and $447 extra. It seems to me it will be awfully difficult to end up with less total withheld by withholding more each paycheck. Any idea what might be going on?
I moved divisions within the company, which I entered as a new job based on the way the paycheck YTD numbers were written, but the first time I entered the info was before that happened, and got the same over/underwithholding mismatch. I've got a bonus coming that will be about 20% of our total income for the year, but I can calculate exactly what it will be, and I guessed 20% on the taxes as the calculator said. That's really about it for weird entries.
