In the theme of the 'retailers collecting information' -
how do you all feel about the new 'service' where as you shop, the retailer will be able to send 'valuable messages/coupons' to your cell phone? If you are in the snack aisle - your phone will make polite recommendations for which snacks to try! Oh Boy! I can just imagine putting some ground beef or steaks into my cart and then having my cell phone recommend recipes or wines (ingredients and bottles of vino right here! in Aisle 4 and 10!!) - the cell phone "knows" I visited the meat case (and maybe even which quandrant - the ground beef and/or steak sections...
Just what I need - more distractions at the store.
How do you all feel about that? Would it make for a wonderful shopping experience OR is it an invasion of privacy?

I wouldn't want it on my phone, especially if I were paying by volume on a data plan. I wouldn't mind if they attached a small tablet to the shopping cart and had that on the shopping cart.
It would be nice if I could also type in something I couldn't find and have it tell me in which aisle it could be found.

I would love if I could type what I'm looking for into an app and then it shows me where exactly in the store that item is located.

I'd love it if they had a kiosk (maybe with the price checker thinga -ma bob) where I could enter (or say) what I wanted and it would show me/tell me which aisle it was in. I don't need it via my phone.

Just what I need, another pointless app running in the background on my phone 24/7 draining the battery, using my data allotment, and sending my information to a company.

I'm sure retailers would like to do that. I personally wouldn't like it. To me saving a few bucks wouldn't worth the hassle.
I'm wondering if eventually we'll all be checking out with our phones or by some other means, and do away with clerks altogether. Just grab what you want off the shelf and walk out with it. A scanner will automatically communicate with your electronic device and deduct the necessary funds from your account.

A scanner will automatically communicate with your electronic device and deduct the necessary funds from your account. It takes me a long time to adapt to new technology. If I had to have a personal electronic device to shop somewhere, I'd go elsewhere. I've never lost a cell phone, but the possibility is the main reason I'm careful about what I have on my cell. I don't do anything that would make it easy for someone to access financial information or things I consider very personal if they have my phone. I'm not big on apps because too many of them want to gather information from your cell and I'm when it comes to things like that. The fun or convenience is not worth having to figure out how to preserve my privacy. That's just me though.

I have a junk email account specifically for this purpose. I like coupons.

Nope. Read "Dragnet Nation". Already they can tell where you are in the store (because your phone is pinging cell towers) and how long you linger in front of the condom racks. You're going to tell them your whole shopping list, too? So they can give you 50 cents off 2 of something when you'd planned to buy only one? No, thanks- in fact, I keep mine in a Faraday bag in my purse.

According to the author of "Dragnet Nation", when she was with a team at the WSJ that tested 100 apps, 43 were "leaking" information even when closed. The only really reliable way to shut them all up is to put the phone in Airplane Mode, although that also means you won't get incoming calls.

These are the sorts of things that a technology like Google glass would probably bring to life. Imagine that while looking over the wine section, you get prompted when you pass over the bottle that pairs best with what you are looking to make; along with its Parker score. Or you have a bunch of stuff in your cart, and as you look at it, the display lists ideas for what you could make -- and as you focus in on one, you get its nutritional information, and reviews of the recipe.
