IF someone wanted to be in Ithaca for a few days but had to stay in Binghamton, would the drive back and forth be reasonable? Would it be treacherous (the most direct routes look like smaller 2 lane highways)?
And, if someone had to be in Oneonta for a day, what town in that area would be close and have reasonably good hotels (aside from Cooperstown which only seems to have $$$$ hotels available for the time span I am looking at)?

The drive shouldn't be bad at all. Especially now, the weather is calming down. You'll go north on I81 which is a great road and then get off at Exit 8 which says: Whitney Point/Lisle for 79. You'll get on 79 heading West towards Ithaca. Great roadway, no problems. North on I81 between exits 7 and 8 Look for accommodations in Oneonta. It's a college town so I'm sure there would be places to stay. It'll be nice this time of the year.

I definitely vote for the Holiday Inn in Oneonta. I stayed there for the majority of my 3 months company paid stint and I liked it.
Definitely want to reserve early because they get a lot of traveling teams / parents staying there and more so doing summer camp/baseball season in Cooperstown.
Oneonta is pretty central and you are within 1 hour of Binghamton (worked by there for 2-3 months). And about 40 minutes to downtown Cooperstown, I also worked at the store there. Cute and small little town store, gets rocking doing baseball season.

Also the other reason we liked the Holiday Inn was doing the 3 months I was there my wife could visit with our dog.
They allowed pets for an extra $25... Not per night, just a one time $25 fee. So she did not have to worry about where to leave him, etc (MIL did not live with us yet).
Definitely recommend them!

I work inBinghamton and live right over the PA border. Ithaca isn't a bad drive at all. Should be a pretty drive depending when you're coming. Let me know if you want hotel or restaurant recommendations.

Psst, GRG, the area you are talking about isn't Western NY. At least not to those of us that live there...

It's usually referred to as the Southern Tier. WNYers think of the Southern Tier as the three southern counties of WNY: Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties, not beyond the finger lakes. Interesting.

My aunt and uncle live outside of Binghamton and the last time we visited them, we drove up to Ithaca. It would have been a nice little drive ... unfortunately I was 6 weeks pregnant and trying to hide the fact I was sick as a dog and sitting in the back the car trying not to get sick. I did enjoy our trip to Ithaca. Very pretty.
That said, Oneonta is in the opposite direction, so I don't think I would stay there and commute to Ithaca, but I'm not that familiar with the area.
