I agree with the notion that fresh vegetables are more of a spring/summer thing (even though I eat them year-round) so I solve that by roasting my vegetables in a nice warm oven in the fall/winter. Provides warmth and a great smell in the house. I use roasted vegetables on lots of things.

Sorry, but the mantra that eating healthy is more expensive is complete bunk. Yes, maybe you can't buy organic or more higher priced, less available veggies, etc. But you CAN eat healthy if you choose to. You can buy a huge bag of rice for cheap. Frozen veggies here are often on sale for 10 bags for $10. Carrots, celery, etc are not all the expensive. It is simply a choice. Absolutely! Fresh produce is the least expensive item in my food budget. Dairy and meat are the most expensive ones bc I buy very selectively. If I didn't, it would be fairly cheap too. I am so freaking tired of all the talks about starving children and people going hungry. While this country might have its share of problems, finding food and not even expensive healthy is not one of them.

Because it is outside. And cold. Actually, he kind of does have a point. It is more fun to eat out of the garden. I pick beans and pea pods and whatever and eat them while working out there. Stuff I'd never normally go and buy. When you slave all spring/summer keeping the weeds and bugs away from your plants that red pepper is amazing tasting. I prefer to not have to work to get veggies

I try to buy in season as it seems like that's when you get them at their best (and cheapest). I can only very rarely find a tomato that tastes like a tomato in January, so just don't buy them then.

That was my healthy meal! I hate buying fresh vegetables because they always end up going bad before they get used up and they seem so expensive. In the summer I have so many cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, peppers... I end up giving bags of them away. Paying $1/piece for them (or whatever it is) when I've tossed them for months bugs me. oh wow, we run out of fresh veggies before the next shopping trip....you need to figure out why you won't eat them when you buy them but will eat them when you grow them Because those of us who live in the tundra are ssubjected to grocery store veggies that taste like ass in the winter. I'll eat the grocery store veggies but they don't taste anything like the home grown ones in the summer.

I dont' know... i'm coming back around to lard ... Lard - in small quantities - is awesome!!!
A few summers ago, we visited one of our friends with a house on the lakes north of Ottawa and picked wild raspberries almost every day. They were so yummy and we still had tons left over, so made jams, pies, etc. Tasting pie crust made with lard reminded me how good lard is in pie crust and biscuits.
Very nerdy story - at the end of that trip, I brought back several cans of maple syrup (they have "clear" which is yummy and hard to get here) and 2 blocks of the Canadian lard we used for pies since I can only get a crappy lard here. Am I the only person who declares everything at customs? Because when the guy read the form that said "3 cans syrup and 2 pounds lard" he about fell over laughing. In his polite way, he told me I probably didn't need to bother with declaring that in the future.

Ok - just checked trix - they got an a- also When DD was younger we used to have Pop Tarts as a treat maybe once a week. For some reason I didn't buy them for a few months, then the next time we had them all I could taste was the processed chemicals. It takes awhile, but you can retrain your tastebuds.

I ate this all! It is awesome! Only thing I can't find in USA to purchase is cow udder. I would make $$$$$$$$$ if I could persuade anyone to sell it to me. However it is not sold anywhere in US. We haven't had a pop tart in years, well Loop and I haven't. The kids might be getting them at school. We do keep whole grain cheerios in the house pretty regularly. For a quick simple breakfast they aren't bad. Far better than the candy flavored cereals, pop tarts, and whatnot.

What does cow udder taste like, that is a new one for me, I'm sure they had them in the ethnic stores in Texas. Tastes like chicken, with a side of milk.

We eat salad almost every night. I get those giant tubs of organic mixed greens from Safety for $5. And every good salad has the following components:
- beans/nuts/seeds for protein: usually edamame or garbanzo beans for us. Rarely some left over meat. Pumpkin seeds are good, too. Love toasted pine nuts or walnuts, too. - cheese: usually feta for us, but have done blue cheese or parm reg. - fruit: raspberries, dried cranberries, strawberries, something.
Then just whatever veggies we have laying around. Tomatoes, cucs, peppers, avocado. Those would be my favorite.
I usually use basalmic vinagrette for salad dressing.
We serve salad next to whatever the main dinner is. Last night was chili and salad. Night before I had a red pepper pesto grilled chicken breast with cous cous and salad. Night before that was ravioli and salad.
Etc.
I try to mix it up so it doesn't get too boring.

What does cow udder taste like, that is a new one for me, I'm sure they had them in the ethnic stores in Texas. It spongy kind of but not chewy. I had never had taste for it. But people go crazy over this thing. They make it into a stew using udder in place of meat. Also every one had their own dish made of it. Possibility would be endless but there is no udder...

So in general we do eat like crap, but so far I haven't found a single thing to fatten up my boys. They do enjoy beef and ice cream and have been known to eat an apple or two over the course of a week.
We ate whatever we were served growing up, you learned quickly that you either ate what mom cooked, or you went hungry. With four boys it was either eat what was on the table a quickly as you could, or it would be gone before you could get seconds. I grew up middle class, but still remember how much I loved that free cheese mom would bring home. Do they still have "government" cheese?

The only fresh things I buy are broccoli, blueberries and blackberries. I also eat... wait for it... yoplait yogurt!! I do buy organic milk though so that evens it out, right . In addition, I also eat certain Weight Watchers and Lean Cuisine meals for dinner. Sorry people, after working 10 hr days, spending an hour in traffic and then working out for an hour the last thing I want to do is cook. It is just me so if I want to pop a lean cuisine in the microwave I will! Yep, I do it all wrong everyday... but I can say it is on my dime so if someone from the YM food police is scouting out my cart at the grocery store they won't be able to claim THEY are paying for my choices. I pay for my own food so
