I am so happy... a) Since I became a department mgr last June I have been trying to get my assistant promoted also because I honestly believe he could do a phenomenal job. So I have been showing him the managing sides of it and letting take over some of my responsibilities. I found this morning a position is opening up at the end of April/beginning of may (someone is retiring) and they are strongly considering him. Basically I was told he was a shoe in for it... b) My boss told me in the same breath this morning that my review for June (which affect my raise) is looking pretty good. I could definitely use some extra $$$ to go towards our 401K (goal is to increase it to 25% when I do get my raise... if all goes well hoping for 4% or so) c) Also find out that someone announced that they will indeed retire beginning of next year (it has been rumored but it was never a certainty since that person have been talking about retiring for years now) and my boss boss (the Regional VP) told me to throw my name in there. Again, I would be happy if I get it, a step up the corporate ladder but like I explain before it might be a pay cut since I will no longer be a hourly employee but salary (so no OT) and I am in a business where sometimes you have to work OT and with it I could possibly make more. But hey, need to look at the bigger picture right. d) my wife went the Woodbury Commons on Monday and got like 2 new pair of shoes, a purse, and I forgot what else. And you know what I don't care since she brought her mommy with her and she paid for everything. Yeah! I did not even ask how much she spent because I will no longer have to listen to my wife saying she needs new shoes or a new purse when she have more than I can count (the whole top 8ft section of my side of the walk in closet is covered with her purses) Can't complain, been a good week. Also today is PAYDAY

I don't want to burst your bubble and I know that all companies are not exactly alike, but I do want to warn you of some of the consequences of climbing the corporate ladder. Depending on how high you go, the hours can be ridiculous. DH's director retired over six months ago. Now, DH manages three departments and reports directly to the VP. He does the same work and has the same responsibilities as the other directors in the organization, but the company is trying to get lean and mean so they have not promoted him or compensated him for the additional work/responsibility they have asked him to take on. He comes home, has dinner, relaxes for MAYBE an hour and then works from home via computer sometimes until after midnight. He works off and on throughout most of his days off too. The only time he is not working is when the VP and other directors are not working. He is being paid as a manager and his salary is really good, but when you break it down to $$/hr. - not so much.

Thanks dancimama and I am aware of that. Per the base salary, I would be getting anywhere from 10 to 20% increase in pay, but I would be expected to work more hours if needed that I will not be getting paid for. So it's a catch 22, if I want to move up the corporate ladder I have to give up the OT.

It is pay day for me too, cawiau. And my mom is putting $500 towards the alcohol for the wedding so a smaller expense come April for us! We also get rental money on the 1st . We are looking at a rental and WF is being great, my DF has SL deferred for 3.5 from May and if we can get paperwork stating this they won't count the SL against us in the debt ratio.

The promotion will be a great thing in the long run. Sure, moving a rung up means losing that OT. But a few years from now, when you are eligible for more promotions, you'll make it back and then some.

This is the one that worries me. So long as Mommy is around to pay, all is well. But so long as Mommy continues to feed your wife's need for instant gratification, your wife will always HAVE that need. Then again, I know she knows your feelings on the matter, so as long as your money isn't being wasted, its definitely good that Mommy pays.
So I guess that means that Mommy has also bought herself another weekend visit?

In the long run it will more than pay for the wage I will be losing now. I am following the advice giving to me on the board as to why stress over it. As longs as she understands that we cannot afford to be buying $100 shoes when her student loans are close to $800/month. If her mom wants to spend $400 on her in a shopping trip, let them go for it... I just have to stand her for a couple of days. She came saturday and left on tuesday/

Cawiau, karma to you for caring about your assistant and truly wanting good things for him. In this very selfish world, it's nice to see someone looking out for someone else.

Congrats and happy celebrating! I really admire you for caring about your assistant. I remember your previous posts about him. It's a nice change for me to hear about someone who does not want to out a person who is doing a decent job in his/her vicinity. I'd be very interested to learn how much your wife knows about this and what she thinks of this. I'm with WWBG on the wife issue though.

I have a problem with self-congratulatory posts but after all the negativity out there, I'll accept a few with a pained expression on my face.

Indeed. So long as your wife has learned that if she wants something that is outside your agreed budget, she has to hit up the first bank of Mom. I hope those are nice shoes and a nice purse.

From what I gathered she got the purse on sale for $225 (regular price over $400) and the shoes one for $105 and the other for $80 (they were also on sale for 25 and 50% off) But yea, as long as she understands there is no room in "our" budget for it, we are in good terms.

As I told my boss he would succeed in doing my job because he is truly talented. From day one he has impressed me with his work ethic, his knowledge and his passion for his job. His review is coming up this April and I seriously cannot think of anything bad to put on it, like nothing. HE ROCKS! He is older than me by 13 years but seriously I feel like a proud papa and everyone at work say that is how I sound when I talk about him.

I remember one of your previous threads where you taught another person's assistant how to automate things via a spreadsheet, then his boss told him to forget it once he got back from vacation. With these changes coming, would there be anything you can do for that person? I felt so sorry for him working for such a poor boss!

With these changes coming, would there be anything you can do for that person? I felt so sorry for him working for such a poor boss! yeah I feel for her too and it kinda sucks. I told her to do the following: - call me if she has any questions - with my current assistant leaving at the end of april/beginning of may she can apply to be my assistant - or apply for other positions that might be opening within the company. I've helped her with a few tasks in the past week and so have my assistants. Her boss is truly a douche, because with a spreadsheet it would take her half an hour tops but the way he is making her do it take up to 2 hours, sometimes more depending on the amount of paperwork you have to enter, etc

Congratulations, cawiau. I've read your other posts relating to your job and it sounds like you really care about it and work hard at it. It's so nice to see that rewarded with all the BS that goes on in corporate politics! Good luck with your new responsibilities.
