Our 16 yr old couch and loveseat have seen better days. The fabric is becoming very thread bare in many places. I cannot flip the cushions any more. We don't have $ for a new couch or loveseat. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with slip covers.
I cannot sew. I don't even own a sewing machine.
I have looked on Bed Bath and Beyond a little bit. Slip covers are quite pricey.
What other options do I have? We have two smallish boys and a puppy that we are training to keep off the furniture (the puppy - not the kids ) so I need something durable. We need to get at least a few more years out of this furniture. I have already decided to start a furniture fund which will be in the same bucket as the vacation fund.
Thanks for your help.

Check the sale and clearance section at (Pricey, but great quality ... and if you can live with the color/patterns on sale, you can get a great value) Also, be sure and check Overstock.com When Big Lots has slipcovers, they are good deals.

Amazon.com has a nice selection, too .... and you can search by exact sofa size.
Start with sofa slipcover as your starting search term

I have never been happy with a slipcover. They look messy and don't stay on right and look like, well, a slip cover!
I keep my sofa covered with a king size sheet. Easier to manage & launder and actually stays on better than a slip cover. I have pets that like to sit on the couch while I am away, so this is our compromise.

When our pets had access to the living room furniture I used denim covers. I washed them 3 times a week and they lasted for years.

Ok, ok, I know you said you can't afford new furniture now--but when you can...
I got my sofa from www.homereserve.com/ when my son was little (about 12 years ago I guess). The sofa comes in parts...like you receive it in a flat box and put it together. It has a warranty on the parts, and even when it's out of warranty, you can just have a part replaced, or the cushions. The covers are machine washable and replaceable.
Like I said, we've had ours about a dozen years, I got it expecting my son to totally destroy it...we had the cushions across the back replaced maybe 4 years ago and everything else has held up. It's only fresh on my mind because I was looking at the site just yesterday thinking of ordering new covers.
P.S. There is storage space inside the couch for toys and stuff.

I used a king size brown fuzzy blanket on an oddly sized couch for years.

This thread inspired me to search for a new slipcover or something to drape decoratively or festively over the cat couch on our Catio. (It's the patio we enclosed for our cats, hence the term "Catio") I couldn't find a "good enough" deal on a slip cover in the right color palette (it's lime green and turquoise out there), but I did find a nifty deal for a King-sized sheet set with duvet cover that will work really well for draping over the couch. Yay!
