I recently went to a local Family Dollar store as I did not get enough free calendars and need to send one out. I found one that was not too large and would be easy to mail and took it to the register. The cashier scanned it, said she would be back and left me standing there. She can back and told me she couldn't sell it to me. I asked her why not and she told me because it was coming up as one cent and she couldn't sell it to me for that. I said it's marked $1, I'll pay that. She said no, she had to throw it away and she tossed it on the floor behind the register. I asked if she was going to throw it away, could she give it to me, she said "No". I asked to speak to the Manager and she says I am the Manager on Duty. Her name tag says Asst. Mgr., so I asked when the store manager would be in.
I can't believe that a store would tell a customer they will throw away a good product rather than sell it!
What a waste of my time.
What would you have done?

Sorry that happened to you, Peace!!! I would call their 800#.
Our Family Dollar used to be a sh*t hole, but lately has done a complete 180 (I started a thread here in SS about it a month or two ago).

Unfortunately the way some retail systems work she probably could have gotten in big trouble for selling you something that should have been pulled off the floor months ago. We always erred on the side of the customer, though, and would put something in as a misc item for $1 (or whatever), and then go after the customer left and make sure all the rest of the stock was pulled. But this was at Target, not DG.

From my understanding they have to sell it to you for what it rang up as. I would return when the manager is working and see what they say. Good luck

I'm glad my grocer is more bending on things like this.
The other day while I was there, they had fabulous deep ceramic coated skillets (12") on sale for $10. I was wanting a second one for omelets, so chose one. They also had silicone (plastic?) spatulas, ladles, slotted spoons, etc at the display. I chose a new spatula to go with my new skillet.
When I got to the register, the spatula wouldn't scan. I guess the bar-code hadn't been entered into their system yet. The cashier sent the bagging clerk to the display to check the price (after I told him where in the store they were set out) - when he came back, he said their was no price marked on the display for the item.
The cashier said, how do you feel if I ring it in as $1.99? I said "fine by me" - the bagging clerk said, "She's a regular - I think we should include it as part of the deal when purchasing a skillet since there's no price listed" (as he gave the cashier a wink). She slipped it into my bag and said - "Our policy is Customer Satisfaction, and you shop here often".
The next day, I had to go back to the store for something I'd forgotten, and I noticed that they had added a sign to the product listed as $1 for the utensils. I love my grocer - everything's fresh, & the customer comes first.
They even replace re-usable shopping bags for free when they start to wear out. They usually last a year or two, and I think I've only had 2 wear out on me in all the time I've shopped there - both were replaced without me even asking.

I was going to start a thread..........
For the first time ever I went to a family Dollar on Tue. Filthy. Overcrowded. Overpriced. Staff would not move wo I could get up/down aisles. Stuff is WAAAY cheaper at even CVS or WAG let alone aldi or Dollar Tree.
NEVER AGAIN wasting my time & going out of my general way.

I don't think I've ever shopped at a Family Dollar store. That service did seem poor, but I'm not sure much more could be done. Complaining at the store, regional or corporate level may make you feel better.

I have never, ever seen a well organized, neat Family Dollar. They are way over priced for what you get. About 15 yrs. ago, I needed a set of full size bed sheets in a hurry...unexpected company coming & the old sheets had torn. I got a set there. The first time I washed them they came apart at the seams....never been in one of their stores since!
