At the very end of 2012 I donated two Civil Era Swords to a museum who expressed interest in them. I did the proper stuff, got the appraisal et cetera. My question is whether the cost to ship them from the West Coast to Kentucky via UPS is also deductible? It came to about $250 so worth it to ask the question.
Many thanks for your help,
Bonny

Assuming the museum is qualified to accept tax deductible contributions, the answer would be yes.

Thanks!

Good to know and it wasn't claimed. But that sucker was expensive at $800! What were those sword worth?? One appraised at $7000 the other $2500. But they could have done really well at auction. I've already mentioned elsewhere on the boards that DH's great uncle was a very famous WWII general. Since the swords came through the family they have some serious historical value. And while I wanted the tax deduction, my real motivation was to get them in the hands of an organization that could provide some context for the public. It's an important piece of the story.
Oddly enough it was more important to ME than DH. He would have been happy to send it to auction and take the money and run.
We've got a lot of family stuff and over the next few years I want to develop a plan of how to "rehome" these pieces. With DH being an only child and us having no children we're the end of the line for one branch of the family.
