I started out 2013 as a GMAC mortgage customer. my loan was taken over for handling by a processing company called Ocwen at some point during the year. I didn't have to do anything, even reroute my automatic payments. I only received an end of year statement from Ocwen, nothing from GMAC. since I also refinanced (December) I cannot log into any active accounts to see if there is any additional information available. am I safe in assuming that one is all-inclusive for 2013? thanks in advance!

Is the interest about the same as last year?

I was hoping to avoid digging out last year's return. I'm pulling together my files to meet with my accountant tomorrow. if I have to dig out last year's return, I will. was hoping for an easy answer.

Yeah, hopefully you have your statements. Or call Ocwen the last one that held that mortgage and ask for verification.
On one of our rentals I was researching my costs and called to confirm the 2013 interest. I was told that the 1098? that was sent was wrong, and they were sending new ones. They said they took back the servicing from the company doing the servicing for them, and that I would get two 1098's depending on who was servicing the loan when the interest was collected. I have one that says 0 interest paid - I can safely say that one is wrong, and another one that looks understated, however I only owed a few thousand last year so the interest due would be minimal. From what they said I should have at least 3 1098's for that loan, and one s/b marked corrected and I don't have one marked corrected.
I would call on yours and ask though. My Mother in laws loans used to be with countrywide and the 1098 was on the back of a mortgage statement. Now the new company sends 1098's - but many companies do print the prior year interest paid on the statement.

hmm.....I went paperless a long time ago for my mortgage. it was an automatic payment from my checking account, so it didn't seem necessary to waste the paper on statements. looks like I'm pulling last year's return when I get home tonight. it seems like it's in line with the year before, but I do want to be sure. thanks for the answers!

Without knowing when OCWEN took over, its impossible to say. I would recommend that you contact GMAC to see if you made any payments to them during the year.

that's the problem, GMAC isn't accepting calls for questions. the contact phone number is the same for "Ocwen" as it was for "GMAC". I definitely made payments to GMAC over the year though. the transition was over the summer some time.
