Maybe that is why they are invading the Ukraine. Just to get away from the flu. No way! This is the result of biological warfare initiated by the U.S. - I'm sure you can find a link on the internet somewhere.

Medicine: Flu in Russia Monday, Oct. 28, 1957 Russia was in the grip of Asian flu last week. Word filtered through the Soviet censorship that the widespread epidemic has hit the great cities of western Russia as well as towns in Siberia and the Caucasus. Leningrad was reported to have closed all schools for the first ten grades. In Moscow 500 doctors plus extra nurses and medical students were assigned to hospital duty. Vaccine, though claimed to be effective, was admittedly scarce; medical workers had top priority; next, those in transportation and communications.

Learn Russian Culture: Cold & Flu Cures
Wintertime is the season of sickness, when colds and the flu run rampant through the population (the perfect time to learn Russian tucked under the covers!). With their bitterly cold, endless winters, the Russians know this better than anyone, and have perfected an assortment of effective treatments to ward off sneezing, coughing, fevers, and sore throats without resorting to a doctor or pharmacy visit. If you are going to learn Russian, knowing some classic home remedies will surely impress any native speaker.
Learn Russian Remedies & Cures
The first thing that everyone thinks of when “home remedies” and “Russians” are mentioned in the same sentence is, of course, vodka—and there is some truth to that. If you are feeling the beginning of a cold, a shot of vodka with pepper or garlic will help kill the germs. Garlic, with its powerful antibacterial and immune system-boosting effects, is widely used for homeopathic purposes in Russia, helping with everything from colds to toothaches to open wounds. If the thought of straight vodka and raw garlic doesn’t appeal to you, the vodka can also be taken in hot tea with honey before bed. Before you fall asleep, for extra warmth, make sure to wrap yourself in a few extra blankets, sprinkle some mustard powder in your socks, and learn this Russian saying: derzhi golovu v holode, zhivot v golode, a nogi- v teple. (Keep your head cool, your stomach empty, and your feet warm.)
If you wake up the next morning feeling crummy despite these preventative measures, it’s time to break out the big guns. Congested? Hacking cough? Get ready for the most tried and true of Russian decongestants: mustard plasters. Made of a mixture of dry mustard, flour, and water, then spread on a cloth and applied over the chest or back, these help draw out all the gunk in your system, and reinvigorate your circulation. They do tend to get uncomfortably hot after a while (think blistering), so don’t plan to leave them for more than half an hour. Fortunately, half an hour is just enough time for you to boil a big pot of potatoes. Remove them from the heat, throw a towel over your head, and breathe the steam for a while. Potato steam is better than plain boiled water steam because it gets and stays hotter, plus you have potatoes to eat later on (if you can avoid coughing on them). After your steam and plaster treatment, be sure to continue to consume vast quantities of tea with honey and lemon. To mix it up, you can also try hot orange juice- never cold!
With any luck, the cold will have vanished—or at least been scared into submission by these most uncompromising home remedies. So next time you feel the sniffles coming on, reach for the potatoes and garlic instead of the Dayquil, and heal yourself the old Russian way.

Billion-dollar medical project helped fund "Putin's palace" Published May 21, 2014
MOSCOW (Reuters) - In 2005, President Vladimir Putin personally ordered up a vast program to improve Russia's poor healthcare facilities. Five years later, authorities found that suppliers were charging some hospitals two or even three times too much for vital gear such as high-tech medical scanners.
Dmitry Medvedev, serving as Putin's hand-picked successor at the time, went on national television to denounce the alleged scam. The perpetrators, he said, had engaged in "absolutely cynical, loutish theft of state money." Medvedev instructed Russia's top law enforcement agencies to make sure that "everyone who participated in this is seriously and sternly punished."
Suspects were rounded up in far-flung places, and in 2012 the police ministry said 104 people had been charged in connection with overpriced scanners. Several local officials and business executives were convicted of fraud and sent to prison.
But a Reuters investigation has found that two wealthy associates of Putin engaged in the same profiteering and suffered no penalty.
They sold medical equipment for at least $195 million to Russia and sent a total of $84 million in proceeds to Swiss bank accounts, according to bank records reviewed by Reuters. The records also indicate that at least 35 million euros ($48 million) from those accounts were funnelled to a company that then helped construct a luxury property near the Black Sea known as "Putin's palace" - a nickname earned after a businessman alleged that the estate was built for Putin. The Russian leader has denied any connection to the property.
These findings are part of a Reuters investigation into how associates of the Kremlin profit from state contracts in the Putin era. This and a later article examine what became of the president's grand hospital undertaking. Another story, drawing on a confidential database of Russian bank records, will explore billions of dollars in spending on state railway contracts.
The wealth of Putin's comrades has come under global scrutiny amid sanctions imposed by the United States and Europe on the president's associates over the crisis in Ukraine.
Russia has been renowned for graft since the Soviet Union fell a generation ago. Under the first post-Soviet leader, Boris Yeltsin, "oligarchs" gained control of state-owned industries and grew fabulously wealthy. Those wild days are long over.
