I know this is frivolous, but I'm curious. As everybody knows, I'm the ruthless declutterer in the house, and DH is the hoarder.
I finally got DH to agree to go through his shelves of clothing, for the first time in years. He has 4 long shelves, with 4 piles on each. He also has a hanging closet with another shelf.
So (per our agreement) today I put everything from DH's top two shelves neatly folded on the bed for him to go through this evening.
DH has had ... 66 shirts. -faint-I wanted him to get rid of 22 (1/3), he got rid of 16 (1/4). I'm not complaining, it's still a major improvement. He got rid of a bunch of other items too, and we've only done 2 of his 4 shelves.
But i you'd have asked DH how many shirts he has, I KNOW he would said oh, maybe 25 or 30, and MEANT it. He didn't believe me when I told him he had 66, he insisted on recounting them.
ETA For those of you who feel it's none of my business, DH's overstuffed shelves cause humidity problems because there is no air flow, and moths. So MY clothes (which are in the other 1/3 of that closet) suffer the consequences too.

I bet you go for quality over quantity, MM>
I didn't say DH has a shit ton of nice shirts.

A couple pairs of black and brown shoes. One black belt and one brown belt (to be worn until they fall apart).
Slacks, just few colors of each. Same with shirts. No 2,000 tint and hue variations of white, black, red, yellow, and blue.
When I retired, the suits got sent to Goodwill, never to be seen or worn again. Good riddance.

I meant just button-down shirts.
I'm not counting t-shirts, polo shirts, or any other kind of "top" for a guy.

Yep...husband had about 20. I had to wash, iron and hang them up at the weekend...ready for work.
I bought them actually...and threw out the scruffy ones....No point in making more work for myself, he had what he needed.

Per our agreement, tomorrow he goes through his sweaters / polo shirts / fleeces. Only 43 of those! (Which is still much better than 66 shirts and 50+ t-shirts we he went through today).
I'll spare you the tally of his undergarments LOL.
But seriously, WTF?!
Most people (and that includes DH) tend to wear the same things most often, generally the most recently-acquired items. I'm seriously tempted to make a bunch of those things "disappear". Believe me, if I knew I could get away with it, I would!

20 is PLENTY! If you need to wear a shirt to work every day (and DH doesn't need to, although he generally does), 20 is enough to go for a month without doing any laundry.

I just finished catching up on the decluttering thread so I get that there's more than just 66 shirts involved.
LOL, I'm a worse offender than all of you. Even after a major purge, I still have 150 work shirts. In various colors and styles.
This summer I'll have been there for 30 years. Some of them are "vintage."

Hard to say without going through and counting them. As far as shirts I actually wear on a routine basis, it's probably about 6 sweaters/long sleeved and 6 tee shirts. I just bought a couple of "semi formal" shirts because my mother insisted on updating my wardrobe. Other than that, a few dress shirts and some other shirts I don't wear that often. It's hard to say, maybe 30 or so (not counting undershirts). I usually wear undershirts with my shirts.

Sure but I didn't wash them all....just the ones he had worn.
Its one of those things that gets out of hand if you don't keep on top of it. and washing and ironing isn't exactly my favourite job
I was kind of ruthless with clothes...myself and kids as well. If they weren't getting worn, were too small or scruffy..... they went. Plus I bought the shirts to match his ties....something he wasn't that good at if it wasn't already organised.

One drawer and in an underbed storage box. They are the most organized aspect of my life. And they're all in good to great shape. You can't imagine the number I've discarded over the years.
I am really trying to make myself get rid of them. I've given away 6 this month alone.
Shall I mail you a couple?

Spell, sorry if I wasn't clear. I didn't mean you should have washed them all. I meant I wish my DH would have just 20 shirts, it's more than enough!
Phoenix, that sounds like a reasonable amount of shirts to me.
Like I said, I'm just curious if I'm the only one married to a male Imelda Marcos (and don't even get me started on the shoes!!!)

I love you Malarky so thanks, but no thanks LOL. Are you near Weston? Do people from Weston come to your store? This week I had lunch with a friend from college I hadn't seen in 30+ years. She lives in Weston, and I thought of you.

3 dress shirts. 15 (ish) polo shirts and a gazillion t shirts.
But DH is colorblind so we created a "granimals" system for him. He got tired of asking me if he matched so everything that he has for work coordinates. So that limits his choices.

Thinking about it, I don't have a clue. However my part of our wall length closet has shrunk from 1/2 to about 10% over the years. I'm old fashioned, I buy books not shirts. Come to think of it Im outnumbered in shoes too...maybe 35 0r 40 to one.

TSkeeter, my DH has 2/3 of the closet space. I told him he had 3/4 (technically true) and he reminded me that I have a small dresser in our room, and he doesn't.
I'm not sure my liking him is the right explanation ... I think the more correct explanation would be that I REALLY hate clutter, and if he didn't have the closet space he has, even more of his clothing would be piled up on the valet / chair in our bedroom.

It's all ours. And, as soon as this freakin snow melts so we can find it we are going out there!

Button down type, only six or eight since he's retired. But the rest including t-shirts, "good" t-shirts (silk, wear with sports coat), sweatshirts for gym, sweatshirts for casual (BBQ), Hawaiian shirts, golf shirts, polo shirts, sweaters, sweater vests, Western shirts, and anything that the upper half of the male body can wear - about 60 or so, maybe more.
He has a "one in - one out" policy which tends to get pretty pricey because he is definitely a clothes horse and loves to shop. His recent 30 lb. weight loss meant a complete wardrobe makeover which Salvation Army just loved.
Anyone need a lovely Men's Wearhouse black wool suit, size 44 short, worn twice, no moth holes? Or an equally awesome size 12 black and silver sequin, floor length woman's skirt and top, also worn twice? Damn, we looked good!

Debt, don't take my comments too seriously. It's kind of a joke in my family that the husband gets as much as 36 inches of closet space and the wife gets the other six feet of master bedroom closet, all of the closet in the spare room, at least half of the hallway closet, and stores the rest of her clothes in plastic bins under the bed. One of my SIL's took over the closet in the spare room, then had the spare room converted into a 150 square foot closet.

He has a "one in - one out"
Donethat, so do I (I actually have a one in-two out policy). I think DH is going to have to have a "one in-two out" policy too, because now that he's finally going through his closet, he's all exciting about going shopping for (you guessed it!) new shirts.
Congrats to your DH on his weight loss!
TSkeet, I just don't get that mentality ... how can you get dressed in the morning if your clothes are in all these different places?! (It helps that I hate shopping lol.)

DH has four (4) separate sets of shirts ....... and at least 15 of each set. Short sleeve for dress and casual, and the same for long sleeve. When he lost the 70 lbs and he wanted to get clothes that fit so as he bought new clothes, the old clothes went bye-bye.
He still has more t-shirts than needed but he won't get rid of any ...... even the ones that are XL. I refuse to let him hang anything on my side of closet so when he runs out of room he is SOL. His t-shirts are in drawers, and on shelves ....... but on his side only.

Yay, Sesfw, finally somebody with as many shirts as my DH lol!
DH knows better than to even ask if he can put anything on "my side". Funny that your DH gave up the big shirts, but not the big t-shirts. Congrats to him too, 70 lbs is a LOT!
I just mentioned the "one in - two out" concept to DH ... he thinks it's a good idea, "in theory". (This novel concept had obviously never crossed his mind before.)
